Last summer while visiting Teotitlán del Valle, I studied traditional techniques of preparing indigo, known as Añil in Mexico. From foraging wild plants in the hills to replanting seeds in return, every step carried intention. Every vat has its own rhythm, and every dyer has their own relationship with this plant.
Through the guidance of traditional weavers @sam_dixza and Horacio, I began to understand indigo as a living practice that asks for patience, care, and reciprocity.
Learning to work with this plant has taught me to listen more deeply and I’m so grateful for the journey it has set me on.

4 days of cold weather down here in Oaxaca! If you did not pack for the weather come get your warm wool poncho at our shop on García Vigil #406, Oaxaca, centro.

@dixzarugsnativefarm and i are hopping onto a fibreshed chat later today for @vogueknittingonline , so here's @sam_dixza 's face from last summer to remind you to tune in with us at noon winnipeg/oaxaca time (and if you miss us, you'll get a do-over when we talk natural dyes and colour for upcoming @cosmos.conference activities)🎙️
and then if you flip through, you instead get to watch his hands in motion between the loom and some of our natural dye experiments. i have always loved hands. they are one of my favourite things to watch on a human body, and the hands of a maker or artisan are my favourites always. our hands tell much of our life stories, whether we want them to or not, and their honesty is perhaps what makes me love them so much. @samsonphotography knows to grab hand portraits when we work on projects together, and i like to return the favour for others when i'm behind the camera. well, perhaps the favour is mostly for me which makes it more self-serving than a favour. but i like to think that capturing hands in motion over the years is just as valuable as tracking the growth of laugh lines and eye crinkles 🫶
have you been missing in-depth conversations amidst all the online snippets and highlight reels? join me and @dixzarugsnativefarm this saturday for our next fibreshed panel with @vogueknittingonline ! @sam_dixza will be joining me from oaxaca, and we'll be chatting about land-based textiles in the southwestern mountains of mexico. if you love wool, natural dyes, and ancestral stories, you definitely want to tune in 🌿🐑
you can also join me and vogue in a few weeks for their indie designer & dyer summit - i'll be swapping roles and putting on a panelist hat instead of host hat for once 😘
One day at the ranch @dixzarugsnativefarm in the Zapotecan land of Teotitlan del Valle

If you are in Oaxaca city, stop by our rug gallery on Garcia Vigil 406, we will open a window into a 10,000 year old culture that is preserved on textiles and traditions. These rugs are more than decor, they are our ancient books; a portal into knowledge encrypted into sacred geometry, patterns and symbols that speak to this day and age and hold the key to understanding who we are as humans and the role we play in the delicate fabric of life. You can also take a weaving demo to feel in your hands the power of creation and story telling.
