Today I'm happy to introduce Sam Dienst @sam.dienst
Enjoy her art
I learned about weaving and explored tapestry during my BFA program at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston back in 2015 taught by my professor Ann Wessmann. Since then I have continued to develop my personal approach to tapestry weaving and textile exploration. My work is inspired by the objects around me and flows between more representational and abstract compositions. I love color and use them all throughout the work, seeking to create a balance of values and hues. I also love textures and use a variety of yarns within the weavings, but primarily I use acrylic craft yarn. Once off the loom I finish the tapestries with multiple embellishment techniques including, painting, embroidery, felt appliqué, and beadwork. My practice is the perfect combination of tactile materials and two-dimensional compositions for me.

Meet Artist Sam Dienst @sam.dienst
💫View and Purchase work - Link in bio💫
Sam Dienst is a tapestry weaver and sculptor currently living and working in Detroit.
Dienst layers familiar objects alongside amorphous shapes to fabricate a playful assemblage of color and form. Her vibrant tapestries depict mundane and disparate objects that weave a narrative of daily rituals, perceptions, and experiences. Overlapping elements form painterly compositions of entangled domestic articles, resulting in dynamic, confetti-like clusters that challenge the viewer’s perception of scale. Drawing inspiration from her immediate surroundings, Dienst further manipulates visual language by melding foreground and background, rendering some objects semi-transparent, and occasionally including her name in the fabric. In Cartoon Logic, Dienst’s quasi self-portraits both critique and celebrate the endless cycle of consumption to reflect our interdependent relationship with the material world.
Sam Dienst received her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art and her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has exhibited at the Museum of Museums, Seattle, WA; Martha’s Gallery, Austin, TX; and Metropolitan Museum of Design Detroit, Detroit, MI; among others.
