Here it is, ID015: Sallow Friend - devil worship pts 1 and 2. It cannot be understated just how much good music lurks beneath the surface of Connecticut’s DIY scene. It all started when we played Hamden’s “The Shop” (RIP) on tour last summer. It was a fucked up day of travel and we entered this relatively unassuming DIY studio off the main road running on the fumes of a few soggy uncrustables and warm yerba mate. When New Haven sweethearts, Wally, took the stage it was like a factory reset, and my heart was immediately filled with joy and energy seeing this completely unfamiliar scene of musicians enter their element. It was cemented when heavy hitters, Snowpiler, took the stage. Just another unbelievable band you must see live if you get the chance. After the dust had settled I wandered around the studio dazed and muttering, “I had no idea the bands here were so good” to anyone that would listen. One line kept coming up in conversation with the locals: “you gotta check out Sallow Friend, they’re sick”. Ok fine, I’ll do that.
Sallow Friend is more than sick. They are the kind of playful genius that leaves you stunned, giggling and confused how they could have possibly written that. It’s very catchy guitar rock that twists and turns through each measure, and at times almost feels like an inside joke of such complexity that you’ll never truly understand. When you take a step back and see the whole picture though, it truly is just excellent, original music crafted by the hands of curious and smart creatives that aren’t afraid to show people just how much they love to write songs. What’s really special about this release is that it includes both Sallow Friend’s first and second EP, which offers the listener a rare chance to understand where they started, and where they’re heading.
We finally got to play with these cats last weekend and they are more incredible live, and even sillier. It’s good music for mind expansion, and demonstrates just how much you can do with a conventional rock setup and minimal effects. Certainly will be inspiring the next Main Era record, that’s for sure. Tapes are available on our bandcamp or directly through the artist now!
Love, ID
