WINTER 🥾 BOOT 🥾 DRIVE
@witchcityaction and @salem_survival_program are collecting shoe sizes of our neighbors who need new, warm, waterproof winter boots. We know it’s important to have boots that fit well and haven’t been worn down so, instead of relying on sporadic shoe donations this year, we’re placing a bulk order personalized to our neighbors’ specific shoe sizes. So far, we’ve collected over 50 orders.
Of course, this is a significant cost to order 50+ new boots. We’re super thankful for everyone who has donated to and fundraised for SSP this fall and winter - these donations are helping us meet our boot drive goals. But we could still use help! The community showed up for Blanca in Burlington in August. Now, one month later, Blanca is being ordered to return to Burlington ICE headquarters where again she faces the risk of being detained on the spot or being given a 2-week notice to self deport.
Blanca’s situation is especially acute because she is a survivor of childhood polio living with physical disabilities and mobility issues. Countless detainees describe being denied the medicines and medical care they rely on daily while in detention. Her potential detention or deportation would not only mean being ripped from family and community but probable physical suffering or even death without medical treatment.
Blanca’s case is one of thousands of immigrants in Massachusetts alone who have been detained by ICE or are at risk of being detained in just the last few months. Her check-in comes right in the middle of another “surge” where masked and violent ICE agents flood our state to carry out mass arrests in heightened numbers. This kind of federal action does not make our streets safer, but rather terrorizes us all. We need resources for what actually makes us all safe - housing, education, and good jobs.

Blanca is a Salem community member, organizer, and business owner at risk of detention and arrest. Early this week, Blanca was instructed by ICE to appear in person at their headquarters in Burlington on Friday morning. The implicit choice was to either appear in person and risk deportation, or become a fugitive and risk deportation. Her choice has been to go as ordered to the ICE facility, and it is our choice as her community to go with her.
We refuse to allow members of our community to disappear without a trace. Wake up, stand up, and make sure your voice is heard this Friday.
