@instituteofradicalimagination_ โ I spoke with Alexander Supartono
@alexandersupartono one of the collectiveโs first generation member who also teaches at Edinburgh Napier University, to explore the political, pedagogical, and collective dimensions of their practice.
Founded in Yogyakarta in 1998 during Indonesiaโs Reformasi, Taring Padi has developed a militant artistic language rooted in grassroots organizing, collective authorship, and long-term relationships with local communities. Through banners, puppets, murals, workshops, and public actions, the collective understands art not as an autonomous object, but as a tool for agitation, education, solidarity, and resistance.
The conversation traces the evolution of โPeopleโs Justiceโ banner after documenta 15, reflecting on international solidarity networks, the Palestinian cause, and the tensions between institutional art systems and autonomous political practices.
