On the occasion of Taring Padi’s double presence in Venice — through an exhibition and a mural making at Morion, realized with @saledocks and the @instituteofradicalimagination_ — I spoke with Alexander Supartono @alexandersupartono one of the collective’s first generation member who also teaches at Edinburgh Napier University, to explore the political, pedagogical, and collective dimensions of their practice. Founded in Yogyakarta in 1998 during Indonesia’s Reformasi, Taring Padi has developed a militant artistic language rooted in grassroots organizing, collective authorship, and long-term relationships with local communities. Through banners, puppets, murals, workshops, and public actions, the collective understands art not as an autonomous object, but as a tool for agitation, education, solidarity, and resistance. The conversation traces the evolution of “People’s Justice” banner after documenta 15, reflecting on international solidarity networks, the Palestinian cause, and the tensions between institutional art systems and autonomous political practices. ✊ NO BIENNALE AS USUAL ✊   OVER 3,500 TURN OUT IN HISTORIC MARCH FOR PALESTINE AND WORKERS’ RIGHTS On 8 May 2026, ANGA delivered the first cultural strike at the Venice Biennale in decades with 27 pavilions fully or partially closed, and reduced staffing at the ticket offices and bookshop.   In solidarity with the cultural workers’ strike and to say no to the Genocide Pavilion, over 3,500 people marched on Viale Garibaldi to the Arsenale, filling the street and waterfront with banners and Palestine flags.   The strike was the outcome of months of organising by ANGA together with local activist groups Sale Docks, Mi Riconosci? and Biennalocene, with unions joining and guaranteeing protection to striking members.   Speeches were made by ANGA, union members and striking Biennale participants. Among those who marched and spoke:   🗣️ Gabrielle Goliath, whose exhibition Elegy—mourning victims of Israel’s genocide in Gaza—was abruptly pulled by the South African government before finding an independent home at the Chiesa di Sant’Antonin in Castello.   🗣️ Belgium Pavilion curator Caroline Dumalin made public her team’s refusal to be part of the Biennale prizes, which are devoid of legitimacy after the Jury was forced to resign. She said that this is a way to honour the legacy of the late Koyo Kouoh.   🗣️ Ending the march, Mohammed Joha, In Minor Keys main exhibition artist, shared his words. He stood before the crowd and spoke plainly: “I want to remind the world that Palestine is from the river to the sea, from ‘48 to Gaza. Free Palestine. We are only one body.” The march eventually blocked the main entrance to the Arsenale where riot police attacked peaceful protestors as they tried to pass, causing injuries. While the march continued successfully, ANGA condemns this police brutality against cultural workers exercising their democratic right to protest.   ANGA’s strike call was a response to the appeal of Palestinian civil society to challenge the normalisation of Israeli apartheid and occupation on international cultural platforms. Together in our thousands, the people in solidarity for Palestine and the future of the world.

La biennale di Venezia nasce come luogo critico e di cooperazione, non come passaporto diplomatico per chi rifiuta il diritto internazionale. Per questo l’8 maggio aderiremo allo sciopero e scenderemo in piazza al fianco dell3 lavoratric3 e artist3 della biennale per dire no al padiglione israeliano all’interno della biennale, per sottolineare che nessun paese genocida e coloniale ha diritto a ripulirsi la faccia con un disgustoso artwashing nella nostra città. The theatre presents a puppet play that seeks to reclaim the lost heart of the Italian working class, now captured by the far right. The work examines the historical role of fascism as a mechanism for capturing the imaginaries and emotions of the working class, as well as the current reactivation of these strategies of ideological co-optation by political and economic elites.
