23/11/25 - Kasper Rietkerk’s KRSIX KRSIX is an instrumental London-based sextet led by saxophonist Kasper Rietkerk. Their music blends jazz with rock and folk influences, brought to life by a powerful six-piece band. Their debut album, recorded with a string quartet and featuring guests Anatole Muster, Emma Rawicz, and Immy Churchill, launched at a sold-out Pizza Express Soho in London on June 24th, 2024, on Zennez Records. The band has performed at major London jazz venues including Jazz Cafe and Pizza Express, and toured through the UK with their debut album. De winnaar van de Edison Jazz 2025 in de categorie Nieuwkomer is bekend gemaakt in het programma Round Midnight op NPO Soul en Jazz: ✨ Kasper Rietkerk met het album The Island. Het juryrapport: Saxofonist Kasper Rietkerk werd al geïnspireerd door de Britse jazzscene voordat hij in 2021 naar Londen vertrok. Daar studeerde hij jazz aan de prestigieuze Royal Academy en speelde volop met vele muzikanten. Die ervaringen verwerkte hij in zijn composities voor The Island. Uitgevoerd door zijn sextet KRSIX, aangevuld met een strijkkwartet en aantal bijzondere gastmuzikanten. Het uitgangspunt is energieke jazz, maar de uitvoering zit vol verrassingen. Een krachtig en persoonlijk debuutalbum. Naast Rietkerk op altsaxofoon bestaat KRSIX uit getalenteerde Londense musici op trombone, gitaar, piano, bas en drums. Het openingsnummer ‘Baiji’ zet meteen de toon met rauwe gitaren, een stuwende ritmesectie en felle blazers. Geen rustige opbouw, maar direct volle kracht vooruit. Op ‘Roll It In Glitter’ laat Rietkerk een andere kant van zichzelf horen: bedachtzaam spel, warme klanken. Accordeonist Anatole Muster en zangeres Immy Churchill brengen verfijning, terwijl strijkers extra nuance geven aan het totaalgeluid. Wat opvalt is Rietkerks jeugdige bravoure om zijn muzikale spectrum breed te verkennen. ‘Dark Side’, schreef hij vanwege de oorlog in Oekraïne. Het klinkt donker en meeslepend. Op ‘Ship Of Fools’ zorgt Emma Rawicz voor een indrukwekkende tenorsaxofoonsolo, en met ‘Happened In Eridge’ is het slotstuk een poëtisch rustmoment. KRSIX klinkt hecht, overtuigend en eigentijds. The Island is geen voorzichtig visitekaartje, maar een volwassen artistiek statement. Kasper Rietkerk zet zichzelf onbetwist op de kaart als muzikant, componist en bandleider.
