Swiss Cottage KFC. Two mini fillet burgers. Post-night out debrief. I doll out the events like bullet points, Zia starts talking and the world gets quiet. As he keeps talking I feel my eyes, or myself, zoom in on him. The cars speeding past outside bend around him. It’s not a story, it’s a poem. Earlier that evening we were at Hampstead youth theatre trying to write plays. Zia was working on a silent play about a clown winding up another clown to comeback to life. That night though, as he’s telling this story, I wish there was a place where could just say exactly what us saying now. Out loud.
