I sat down for an interview with playwright Esmé Maria Ng, and stars @kellymarietran and @sagan.chen to learn more about the play. "i know why iris chang died" is a tragicomic play by Esmé Maria Ng told from the perspective of May – a trans masculine Chinese-American graphic artist. In the wake the Atlanta Spa Shootings, May prepares to publish their debut graphic novel, a recounting of their family’s experience during the Rape of Nanking. As May hyper focuses on the past, their twin sister puts her attention into conceiving a baby through IVF. This heartfelt, dark, and deeply funny two-hander takes a look at legacy, family, suicide, genocide, and healing from generational trauma. I’m getting top surgery! Whoa. Wild. Shocker. Surprise I’m *t-s1ur! My friends and community are organizing a fundraiser to cover surgery and recovery costs from my April 10th procedure. Grateful to everyone for donating, sharing, sending good vibes!! To be honest I know a lot of people say this but asking for help right now actually is driving me bananas. It’s only because I’ve surrounded myself with incredible amounts of love and accountability and goodnatured teasing and gentle prodding that I’m finally able to do this - I feel a little like throwing up and also like someone just pantsed me? I think what I’m trying to say is that this is vulnerable and I’m having trouble but this is gonna be the best trust fall I’ve ever taken. Onwards and upwards and I’m ready to come back and support and uplift the HELL out of y’all. Financial support is of course only one (unfortunately necessary) facet of this. I love y’all.
