My first time fire breathing, last For the Love Of It @101outdoorarts last March. Thanks to Rob Sim from @whatapalaverphotos for teaching us all how. I don’t know what I got the giggles for, just how ridiculous it felt in some way, and sensing the change of wind?? Thankfully Rob put me straight before I spat fire in my own face or drank a load of whatever it is you breathe nowadays. Always wanted to try this after growing up in edinburgh watching buskers during the festival, and especially after I found out that according to the Chinese Zodiac I was born in the year of the Fire Dragon! 🔥 🐉 Looking forward to heading back to 101 next week to support The Busking Lab. We have a really nice size group and a full house. The Busking Lab has grown out of the Artist Development programme developed as @nasauk with Rob and Darryl both wanting to find ways to teach people how to develop a busking show, some of the skills involved and ways to support themselves and try work out. Still surfacing from the fever dream of activity of the last few months, mostly doing bread and butter work, but culminating a week ago in Ghost Train 🚂 A huge show in 2 parts commemorating the Departure (part 1 - Darlington) and Arrival (part 2 - Stockton) of the first ever passenger train journey in 1825. A truly one off show by Bill Palmer @avanti_display , Chris Squire @impossiblearts , Bryan Tweddle @tweddlebryan and Andy Plant, produced by the brilliant team @walktheplankarts . Type casting myself and @meganbrooks.111 in / on the medical train car - bringing back 2/3 of the Doctor! Doctor!! team again for the Darlington show - was a real treat despite the deluge. We did 6 x 10 min shows on top of our little Nissan Micra Stage before processing that night to the railway museum, Megan driving with me sat on a dentist chair with udder pumps strapped to my head as part of a massive microscope, dangling a carrot on a stick off the side and offering it to the audience - a call back from our little show. Stockton was bonkers and brilliant. Such a huge scale show and finale. Coordination and stage management in the extreme - it’s sometimes really surreal being involved in these things. All mired by Covid and having to isolate and seperate, mask and sanitise which was less than fun but well supported. Pics here my own but peppered with a few from Darlington Council. Better now and back to mostly admin for a bit. Every now and then reminded of the huge flying light up cow that lit up my life less than a week ago… and the brilliant cast of friends who shared the first passenger journey, as the joke goes - departing Darlington 1825, arriving Stockton 2025. #GhostTrain #s&dr200 #sndr200 #stockton #darlington #CarrotOnAStick

Just some of my highlights from Out There festival in Great Yarmouth this week, including the Fresh Streets #5 conference @circostradanetwork ran with @outtherearts_uk and @outdoorartsuk as well as a packed programme of shows. Great to see so many really great clown shows as well as new aerial style rigs, circus, installations and interactive, improvised shows, and some friends shows too. I had my National Association of Street Artist’s co-chair space cadet helmet on. And was in good company with @physicalfool and @hannahgreenspace . Ended up getting roped into videoing a show, and then dressing as an AI priest, trying to convert audiences to a new subscription service AI God as part of @gorillacircusproduction ’s new show and premiere AI-thentic. Was really great to be part of, working with some of the team and local volunteers to set the scene in the pre show. So many highlights. Lots of conversations including with Arts Council representatives, delivery partners and potential future collaborators for the NASA Space Station programme, as well as getting an ear to the tracks of what is coming down the line. There is a lot of fear about the future of cultural funding in the UK just now. What Out There manage to do with a small team is just incredible. 6 hr drive back and already it seems a world away. Last day of the Fresh Streets conference for us space cadets and aliens. Inspired by keynote speaker Brian Eno this morning (!!) 👀and his theory that: “Play is how Children Learn: Art is how Adults Play.” It’s been great to represent together and have the chance to meet and connect the dots of our Space Station programme, meeting with partners, artists and the incredibly talented community that is Outdoor Arts and Street Theatre in the UK and far beyond.
