I want to share the full story on why I built the MK33 Silver Centurion. It’s to honor a loved one that is no longer with us, my late father-in-law, Mark. Back when I started RyRostudios years ago he was one of my biggest supporters. He was an artist himself and when I started building Ironman suits I remember him talking about the Silver Centurion from the 1980’s comics. I did actually try to take this build on a few years back after seeing @roguesgallerycosplay sensational take on it, but I was balancing so many other projects it quickly got sidelined. It wasn’t until my trip to Cebu, Philippines last year where I stumbled upon a Toys R Us and saw an MK33 action figure for sale. I immediately snatched it up in hopes it might make me kickstart the project again. That was where things sat until this past December when @lvlupexpo reached out to me and asked if I would want to be an invited guest. This is the con that literally put me on the map so I knew I had to put myself out there in the best way. I kicked off the project Christmas Day and didn’t finish the suit until the week of the event. I had never been so stressed, exhausted, and burnt out in my life. But if it weren’t for my lovely wife @rachcladav for holding it down and pushing me through the finish line, I would have never gotten it done. So now you all know why I did this specific suit compared to all my other options. This build in particular was a full circle moment in a lot of different ways and I was able to do it on my ultimate stage. I’m officially past the one year mark of my new setup. A ton of memories made since moving to the East coast and plenty more memories to come! They say never meet your heroes but I’m glad I got to meet one of mine. With the chaos of this past weekend winding down I wanted to share some encouraging words to the cosplay community. Here is a side by side of my first and latest Ironman build. Dating 8 years apart you can clearly see the difference in craftsmanship, attention to detail, and overall esthetic. I think a lot of us are our own worst critique but sometimes we need to take a step back and congratulate ourselves for doing the damn thing! No cosplay is perfect…and even then someone will find ways to find flaws. I’m telling you all now to OWN IT! Especially our cosplay contest participants. Focus on all the good and what you learned throughout the build process. Take that and incorporate it into improving your craft and leveling up each and every dang time.
