“Back to the Future” is a series of images captured at @milanocortina2026 using vintage Graflex Crown Graphic 4x5 cameras, paying tribute to the type of camera that would have been used 70 years ago when Cortina previously hosted the games in 1956. In a modern twist, these cameras have been adapted to record images on smartphones, enabling live transmission of the content captured. First tricky step was sourcing three Graflex Crown Graphic 4x5 cameras in good working condition for myself @paulineballet and @hvivas24 . We ended up finding a couple in Japan and one in the USA. Thanks to @tobywilkins for helping with the custom made @obscuraflex attachments for the smartphones. Check out the other cool products on his page. Finding the sweet spot with these cameras is hard enough with a static subject so trying to focus and shoot action was a challenge! In addition, covering the camera with any sort of rain cover in these winter conditions would cause everything to immediately fog up. Tip of the hat to the press photographers of the mid 1900’s who mastered these camera and produced beautiful images. I love the natural vignette and the tilt lens effect of these cameras.
