You ever see one of those fake smiles? It’s usually because they smile with their mouth, but not their eyes and it looks super creepy.
This guy was looking a bit creepy because I hadn’t yet added the volume on the side and bottom of the obicularis oculi.

I remember that day John Horn gave us all a 2 x 4 and told us to get sculpting. His reasoning was that you’d know your friend from 200 feet off just from the slope of their shoulder and the pitch of their head. And you can get all of that with a 2 x 4.

I have a California and a New York side…
back in my day, geography mattered. We didn’t have YouTube.
I lived in California where figure drawing classes had unhinged gesture drawing and instructors encouraging you to express yourself
As a young man with a machine mind, I did not respect that. How could I express myself if I didn’t have control?
New York had the New York Academy of Art with what seemed like the only people in the entire country who had that control.
And so 30 years ago, I moved to the East Coast to get control and for 30 years, I’ve been trying and trying.
And at this year‘s @qvarantine.events I realized that my quest for control had become the main obstacle in my journey as an artist.
It’s so crazy that we as artists live this dichotomy between skill and freedom. Skill is what gives us freedom to create from imagination, but only after we relinquish control.
@mupan said it this way, the way is no way. In order to master it you have to forget it.
It was on day six of Quaratine that I realized I had these two parts of myself. A California part and a New York part and that they have hated each other for decades.
I fought for control. I built a school for control. I have taught thousands my various methods for control, but I’ve not expressed myself or created art from the whole cloth of who I am. That shits scary.
And I am so grateful for the control that I do have but maybe it’s like growing up when you realize that your dad wasn’t an asshole and that was just a story you started telling yourself long long ago. He had his own personality and fears and dreams even..
And so now I look at that California side with new eyes and realize that all of those instructors encouraging me to express myself we’re also right and that maybe it’s time to give up the machine mind of youth and work in the liminal space between parts.

2) Infraorbital triangle
Shapes like this are invaluable in sculpting and help your brain do more art and less proporton checking.

But I don't know what planet people are on when they divorce art from technology... The renaissance artists literally laid the ground work for 3d scanning and computer vision by pioneering the development of linear perspective. Isaac Newton used to teach linear perspective... Newton...
Folks worried about ZBrush, worried about AI forget one thing: the material always changes... artists are always working in new mediums. The medium is not the artist. The guy or girl who creates is the artist.
