She didn’t like posing for pictures, and she often shied away from any camera. On this day, she smiled tenderly and it’s the only photo I have of this. It’s hard to say how strong she was, but one way to illustrate this is that at the time she was battling with terminal cancer, she passed only two months later. Yet she smiled. I was too young to really understand what that meant.

These are a selection of images from my ongoing documentary project, Sonder (2025- ).
These images stretch across the last year of documenting people and place.
Kalk Bay is a fishing village at the southern edge of South Africa. Built on a history of migration and labour, the villiage is a site of rising tension as government policy withhold permits from local fishermen, tourism and gentrification creep into the tight-knit community. New businesses open and many big new houses sit empty waiting for those who can afford them.
What started out as a simple trip to Kalk Bay has turned into an adventure I could never have imagined. These images don’t even scratch the surface of the whole project, and definitely doesn’t even begin to explain what it means to me.
