BLACKTOX
That’s my term for it. If we can have #brotox and #babytox, then why not #blacktox? You heard it here first.
So I’ve been in cosmetic dermatology since residency starting in 2003. I have witnessed the evolution of thought about injectables in the Black community evolve over that time.
When I first learned how to do neurotoxin and filler injections in Derm residency, easily 99% of my patients were white. Black people did not identify with these procedures and it easy to see why. None of the marketing was geared toward ours or our unique aging needs. Also, injectables weren’t as openly discussed back then and the only evidence of injections that the general public had access to were the extreme, overtoxed, overfilled faces. Who would want to look like that?
There was also the age old adage that #blackdontcrack and #beigedontage. While melanin is protective, we can still benefit from these procedures.
Now, I have besties coming in for Botox together, husbands and wives scheduling simultaneous filler appointments and so much more representation from #expertinjectors of color on the socials. It’s a completely different world and the companies that make and market these products have taken notice and gotten with the program, highlighting a more diverse population in their ads, including Black doctors in clinical trials and on ad boards and truly addressing the specific aging needs of all racial and ethnic groups.
@allure , thank you for featuring me in this awesome story that explains why Black people are getting more Botox and Fillers and looking and feeling incredible as a result. @ruthontherunway , you knocked this one out of the park.
If you’re Black, do you get botulinum and/fillers? Do you discuss it publicly or keep it to yourself?

You met WONDR 2 years ago from the Summer Daze series (and again recently during the re-releases!). Since then, he has been busy perfecting his craft. The musician is exploring his creativity and further solidifying his sound. We caught up with WONDR and got more into behind the music. The full in depth #TeeTalk will premiere 11/6 at 12pm PST and 3pm EST so make sure to tune in and catch up with WONDR!
This return also features an incredible piece by journalist Ruth Samuel about how one woman is merging fashion and immigration. Ruth presented her idea for this piece and noted how during this election immigration is a topic that has been left out of the conversation. Read her article to see how Paula-Andrea Agudelo Poulsen is bringing together fashion, immigration, and the Black Lives Matter movement.
And of course, ya girl brought the entertainment for y’all! Enjoy ✨
This is so important. The dehumanization of Black women is unfortunately still so common on a social level, as well as in so many systems in our society. I can’t believe this has to be said but normalize treating Black women like people!! Protect & cherish Black women always! -soph
