Rush Johnston (they/them) is an interdisciplinary artist, choreographer, dancer, filmmaker, and writer based in Brooklyn, NY. They work at the intersection of visual and performing art, crafting work addressing gender, sexuality, Indigeneity, and mental health. Originally from South Carolina, Rush often draws on their Southern roots and experiences growing up in the Deep South as a queer and trans person. They hold a BFA in Dance from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. Rush is the founder and artistic director of Kaleid Dance Collective (
@kaleid_co ) and serves on the steering committee of New York City’s largest dance event, the Dance Parade (
@danceparadenyc ).
Rush’s choreography has been shown at venues in New York City and beyond. In the city, they have been featured at venues such as the Tank, Barnard Movement Lab, and Arts On Site and in site-specific performances in Tompkins Square Park and along the Gowanus Canal. Outside of New York, Rush has presented work in cities including Philadelphia, Washington D.C., San Diego, and Vienna, Austria. Rush has successfully produced and choreographed four evening-length works and has been featured in many festival and split-bill performances such as Dixon Place’s “HOT! Dance” festival, THAT SHOW, and KYL/D’s “Inhale.”
