WINTER JAZZ FAIR 2026
A day of jazz filled with engaging concerts, panel discussions, and vendors.
February 20, 2026
Chicago Cultural Center
78 E. Washington Street | Chicago, IL
FREE!
Velvet Lounge Jam Session: Isaiah Spencer Quartet
5:15pm - 7:15pm | Preston Bradley Hall Hall
With his edgy style and innovative beats, jazz and blues drummer Isaiah Spencer has carved out a unique reputation in Chicago and on the national and international music stage.
Not only has the North Side native performed at the Chicago Blues Festival, the Englewood Blues Festival, Jazz Showcase, the House of Blues and Rosa’s, he has taken the stage to perform with legends like Fred Anderson, William Parker and Ernest Dawkins.
The Chicago Tribune’s Music Critic, Howard Reich, has called his sound “propulsive” and “incendiary.” Chris Searle, culture writer for the Morning Star said his sound is “fiery.”
Since 1998 Isaiah has been an active figure in the Chicago, national and international music scene. His talents have led him to opportunities in which he has graced the stage with jazz and blues greats Buddy Guy, Pine Top Perkins and Eddie Clearwater and jazz luminaries such as Clark Terry, Roy Hargrove, Tom Harrell, Donald Harrison, Wynton & Branford Marsalis and James Moody. He also has performed with others such as Nicole Mitchell, Mark De Clive Lowe, Malachi Favors, Roscoe Mitchell, Cyrus Chestnut, Corey Wilkes, Maurice Brown, Vijay Iyer and has also toured with William Parker, Ernest Dawkins and many others in creative music.
Isaiah has served as a mentor and inspiration to under-privileged children in Chicago. He directs his own drum camp program and through his volunteering teaches children how music can help propel one to greater heights despite obstacles. He is now the assistant band director/ percussion teacher at New Trier High School.
Isaiah leads this venerable jam session with Lenard Simpson on alto sax, Runere Brooks on bass, and Brandon Harper on piano.

Man……..I’m not one to post about stuff like this, but this one truly hurts. With my father being the first, Anthony Jackson has been the second biggest influence of my continuous development as a bass player. I first heard about Anthony Jackson through my father David Brooks, my dad would sit me down and show me countless recordings of songs that Anthony Jackson played bass on from recordings such as For the Love of Money, to Chaka Khan records (clouds) (what cha’ gonna do for me) , Dave Weckl, Rachelle Farrell, The Wiz soundtrack , Michel Camilo, Quincy Jones, way too many to name. Anthony Jackson extreme dedication to his craft and his approach to music and versatility to any style has always and still inspires me to the absolute max. From the full sound that he gets out of the instrument, and from every note being meaningful and not wasted, and from the ability to play in any arena with any style of music and never waver and yet still be so effective is not easy but Anthony Jackson has managed to do it, also from being such a great reader. Anthony Jackson was the epitome of a full musician. Much much respect and thank you for the inspiration. My condolences to the family.
