And then the window.
The big glass window. And the bike lock chain — just a light swing, lighter than you’d think, curiosity meeting physics— and the glass went. From bottom centre-left outward like the shooting of a spiderweb, row by row, in the silent snowy cushioned air, spreading, branching; it was pretty spectacular. I watched it in awe. The kind of thing you can’t look away from because it’s already happening and stopping watching it isn’t going to stop it — I watched the pattern in the breaking.
— and then the calculation began. The cold calculation that I’ve done something irreversible. How bad. How much. — think big, think quick,-— somewhere between the initial shock and Rustlings Road I passed through the whole cycle. The mourning cycle. The entire thing. Denial — it wasn’t that bad. It was that bad. Bargaining — maybe the insurance would cover it. Anger — why did I even — and then, by Ecclesall Road, quietly, without ceremony — acceptance. The glass is cracked. The window is gone, This is what happened today.
The insurance covered most of it. Not all — that money is gone. A consequence with a price tag — I have left that behind now.
Acceptance arrived somewhere on Rustlings Road, the glass already settling into its new shape.
Life’s a mess and no one is right.
