When Cora asked me to record some music for the film she was still exploring the aural histories archive at the Herbert gallery. She sent me some recordings of people talking about their experience of race, identity, love, sexuality, religion and belonging. The recordings were so moving I decided to improvise at the piano while listening to them. I spent hours playing along and pulled out the ideas I felt best supported the words.
The voices you hear are Babs, Joyanti, Ewan, Chris, Mavis and Karem. Thank you for the stories.
Final video: I used my childhood piano at my mum and dad’s house to record and was constantly interrupted by Herbie their dog who likes to sing when I play.
