“The Window”, some shots and closeups of my project with Andrea, painted entirely from life over about 20 hours under (chaotic) natural light in my kitchen. I loved the feeling of painting not in a studio but in a personal, everyday setting, the atmosphere that arose from that, and the challenges it brought.
The composition started out inspired by Carolus Duran’s “l’homme endormi” but in style it ended up more influenced by Tintoretto- in part because the canvas was in darkness and I could barely see the brushstrokes i was putting down so they ended up being pretty loose and scratchy, which i then leaned into. I love the way environment determines the journey of the artwork- I think this is what painting from life means- you relinquish control to nature itself. This is a way to try to eliminate ego- by acknowledging and allowing nature to direct you.

Painting the hunter’s background - with reference to Titian’s “Diana and Actaeon”
Painting imagined elements onto a completed portrait was a totally new kind of challenge!

Couple of days down in Rome to catch a show and some more churches with mysterious opening hours that have eluded me until now. As always seeing paintings in the flesh is nothing like seeing photos! Unimaginable and incomparable. Caravaggio needs to be seen in a dark moody church.
My experience in the Prado inspired me to keep up the habit of taking notes instead of photos in galleries which i would highly recommend! I find it commits everything to memory 1000 times better
Also paid my respects to Raphael’s tomb in the Pantheon. What an honour
@rose_lazarus_ painted from life, to the scale of life. Having never tried to paint tattoos before I was intrigued to try painting Rose’s tattoos which along with her sunset-coloured robe I found so characteristic of a personality and a moment. I also drew inspiration from Velasquez’s Venus which I have always loved seeing so much in the National Gallery in London.
60x90cm oil on hand-primed linen. Painted in four sessions.
Vélasquez pilgrimage has been a long time coming.
Pictures of paintings taken from Museo del Prado website. No photos taken in the gallery! Only sketches! 😮💨

Mimosa themed still-life painted with the champagne bottle left over from the holiday season. Painted from life when the January light in my studio was too weak for portraits. It’s the same size as my “Still Life with Campari” as I thought the two could pair well together and perhaps hang next to each other. DM me to see them on your wall!

5-session portrait of Mirko @muko.fearli
Loved this pose, so much fun, Mirko makes it (almost) easy! Tried to channel some Rubens-y red tones and calligraphic strokes as seen in this season’s lectures.
Painted entirely from life, to the scale of life. 50x70cm. DM me to buy it, or commission one like it

The hunter- I started this one back in May, “finished” and then went back to it many times. My inspiration was the character of Actaeon from Titian’s Ovid paintings which are some of my favourite paintings ever (go and see them in the National Gallery in London). So first I painted the portrait, entirely from life (natural light, life-size), with the lovely model Kiri.
First part “finished”, but i wanted to add scenery and place the character in his story. I took a while to work up the courage because i’d never tried it before. I used the Titian painting as a reference as well as my imagination. Lots of logistical issues- i painted the portrait in my bedroom as that was the only space i had at the time, and it was pretty cramped - then adding new elements onto a completed portrait, you have to keep reassessing so that it all works in relation to the whole.
I still see a lot of faults but I’m fairly happy with how it turned out as it’s given me a lot of ideas and drive to explore more in the imaginative, narrative line.
Grazie mille al grande modello, professionale e super amichevole @_kirikush_
