Audio Description performers live between the words on the page and the world happening on screen.
In this workshop, Roy Samuelson breaks down how intention and context shape every line, and why the performers who understand that deliver something audiences actually feel. You'll work with real scripts, get to the mic, and walk away with tools you can use.

This narration demo is really personal to me ❤️
Each piece connects to a part of my life and how I’ve experienced the world, then and now.
The first one is that home and lifestyle feel. It takes me right back to when I used to watch @hgtv . I love interior design, decor, and especially watching spaces transform.
I even redesigned and renovated our main floor with ageing in place and universal design in mind so stepping into that style again… it felt familiar, almost like coming home.
The second piece was inspired by a recent visit to the @spacecentreyvr and that sense of wonder you feel in storytelling like @natgeo where you’re not just hearing information… you’re being carried into something bigger.
And then the third piece… this one sits really close to my heart.
It’s narration layered with integrated audio description where storytelling and accessibility exist in the same breath.
You’ll hear two voices moving together and I step in through description, not just to explain what’s there but to carry the emotion of the moment.
Because as someone living with sight loss I know what it means to rely on those words.
And I don’t just want people to understand what’s happening
I want them to feel it… to be part of the experience.
This is the kind of work I care about where voice creates connection, and access is part of the story.
All scripts written by me.
Grateful to my Narration teacher @dalewolfe_@otmvoiceover , to Marie Ward @1marieward@otmvoiceover.toronto for directing this demo, and Jeff Wright @jeff_wright_recording for bringing it all together on the engineering side.

Accessibility isn’t a checkbox, it’s an invitation.
In our latest sit-down session of Connected & Curious, Roy Samuelson shared a perspective on audio description that shifted everything. He doesn't just see it as a service; he sees it as hospitality.
"I locked in on hospitality, welcoming someone into an experience they'd otherwise be excluded from. I want someone to say, 'Somebody made room for me here, and I belong in the story.'"
When we design our worlds, our content, and our stories with everyone in mind, we aren’t just being "compliant." We are making room. We are telling our community: You belong here.

DescriptionA vertical video frame. In the upper half, an icon of headphones with a microphone is paired with white text that reads: "Roy Samuelson on The Emotional Power of Audio Description Nobody Talks About." Below the text, a man with short brown hair and a green shirt under a dark blazer, identified as Roy Samuelson, is smiling warmly while holding the wires of his white earbuds. He is set against a dark background with a soft glowing highlight behind him. At the bottom, white closed-captioning text reads: "I locked in on hospitality, that there's this sense of welcoming someone into an experience that they'd otherwise be excluded from. And I carry the weight of that. I get how important it is to be present to that sense.”

Advocacy has been part of my life long before I lost my sight. It began as a solo journey when my mom was denied Supplemental Security Income after her dystonia became severely debilitating. I started what became a successful letter writing campaign to my state legislators. That early experience showed me that one voice can create change.
My advocacy deepened when my son was diagnosed with ADHD and I had to learn how special education works in order to collaborate with his school. These experiences taught me how important it is to understand systems, ask questions, and stay committed even when the path forward is not always clear.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine how much more powerful advocacy would become through connection. Meaningful relationships expand what is possible, especially when we work toward something larger than ourselves. Two of those individuals are featured in our newest podcast episode. Both are talented voice artists, with one being a seasoned Audio Description performer whose work helps make storytelling more inclusive.
This conversation is more genuine than polished. We are still learning the ropes of podcasting and will continue refining our craft as we share real stories that matter without unnecessary noise.
If you want to better understand the people behind Audio Description, I invite you to watch the full episode of Connected & Curious with Andy on YouTube.

I often get asked, "how did you get into Audio Description?" So, here's a snippet of my story.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Roy Samuelson of ADNA (Audio Description Network Alliance) for a vulnerable and candid interview. We talk about how one email changed everything, why accessibility is so important, why we need joy and connection now more than ever, and so much more.
