I get in my own way a lot. I have ideas and before I even start making them I come up with reasons not to make them. BUT! The last few days I've been working on these jars and it feels so good to get out of my own way and just let the thing in my head become a thing in front of me. Will I stall out before I glaze them? Perhaps! But I have my fingers crossed that these cool things will make it all the way 🏁🏁
Hi, I’m Sarah Hazelke!
I live in Chatham with my sweet little family and two perfect cats.
I am a visual artist working primarily in ceramics. I have a creative business called Round Designs (@rounddesigns ) and I run Round Clay Studio (@roundclay ) in Chatham where I make my work and teach clay classes.
My work serves to boost the subtle things that I appreciate in the world. Two favorites are explored in my piece: the joy of encountering a wondrous creature in an unexpected place and the whimsy of an object making a sound you don’t expect. I have been making pots that make sound for years, this is the first one that doesn’t do double duty as a utilitarian object.
Connect with me for clay classes or to show me a cool creature you saw on a walk.
My dream project is any art collaboration that I get to do with my daughter. I’d also love to work with a musician on making custom percussion instruments out of clay.
#vendorshowcase Meet the artist behind Round Clay Studio & Designs, where ceramics are crafted to spark joy through whimsy, color, and a deep love of cats. Working from her studio in Chatham, NY, Sarah Hazelke creates small-batch pieces that blend surprise and playfulness with everyday function.
Since 2016, Sarah has been a favorite at makers markets, known for giftable pieces like egg-shaped trinket dishes, illustrated cat dishes, leaf-imprinted designs, and her popular pierogi ornaments. She also crafts whimsical jars and mugs that feel as sculptural as they are functional.
Come see her at the Shindy!

Whew! Ornaments at Round is ready to go! I've spent the past couple weeks organizing, receiving, and installing ornaments from 48 local artists (!!!) into my studio,@roundclay . I'm so grateful to all of the artists for saying yes to my idea and creating such beautiful works. I'm grateful to my family who helped me build the displays for this event. And I'm grateful for all of you who have helped spread the word and who will come and see/shop the show and support local creative people.
-Ornaments at Round- opens this Friday, (Nov 28). We're having an opening reception this Saturday (Nov 29) 1-3pm. Hours for viewing and shopping are Thursday - Sunday 11-4 through December 28 (excluding Dec 25).
Sometimes the kiln gods are soo generous! These two big cat plates are fresh from the kiln today and I'm smitten. I've been trying some new things and it is wonderful to be rewarded with beautiful results 😍 Come see them in person tomorrow at @hudsonvalleyhullabaloo
Very happy with how this batch of cat dishes came out. I had so many to paint that things got weird and I really enjoyed it. Casual symmetry, spiral tails, wiggle tails, connected tails, I love them all. First dibs to people who shop at @hudsonvalleyhullabaloo next Saturday & Sunday!
Pierogi, incoming!! I'll have these available at #ornamentsatround @roundclay . The show opens November 28 with a reception on November 29 1-3pm. They'll also end up on my website if you can't make it to Chatham 🥟
This last kiln of leaf dishes made me smile! I tried some new colors, some new leaves. I think there are a lot of beautiful pieces in here. One of the newbies is the gingko leaves. Picked up off sidewalk in Chatham, steps away from my studio! I'm in production mode prepping for holiday sales earlier than ever thanks to my awesome studio assistant Kelly 🤩 Coming soon to @hudsonvalleyhullabaloo@holidayshindy and @roundclay .
🎉🎉Exciting announcement 🎉🎉
This holiday season I invited 50 artists to create ornaments for a special event @roundclay . We're putting on a holiday show/sale of their creations in the studio and calling it Ornaments at Round! The show will run November 28 - December 28. There will be an opening reception on Small Business Saturday, November 29 from 1-3pm. I can't wait to see what everyone has made and share it with you! This will be an excellent opportunity to connect with local talent in the area and provide handmade giftable items for you and yours this holiday season!
Please help spread the word and follow @roundclay where we'll be sharing sneak peeks of some of the artist-made ornaments 📣📣

I’m excited to share a special piece I’ve been working on. It's a place setting for the Imagined Table that will be a part of the silent auction for On The Table, CREATE’s annual summer benefit celebrating creativity, community, and connection. *Because I rushed the pieces off before photographing, these are not the exact ones in the show, they're the backups I made in case of a kiln mishap, but their sibling pieces are in the show*
Join me this Friday, August 29th at the On the Table Preview Party – You’ll get to see what I’ve put together alongside 15 one-of-a-kind artist-designed place settings, original napkin artworks, tasty bites by Fancy Feast Supper Club.
I received a grant through CREATE last year that enabled me to create a new body of work exploring pots that make sound and offered two workshops for free to members of my community. The works they do to support the arts in our area is so important and appreciated.
Support in whatever way you can! Bid on an item, buy tickets, donate - your contribution directly supports CREATE’s mission and funds year-round arts grants, exhibitions, cultural events, and community programming across Greene, Columbia, and Schoharie Counties.
