To see what can happen if you commit yourself to something. ... But to see my daughter watching, learning and choosing to engage with what I do. There is something very special about that. #breath #author #parent #roseloseshernose #inspiration P.S. this book was written for families, knowing that many parents wouldn't get round to reading an adult book, but it acts as a trojan horse, educating parents as they read it with their kids. It is designed to be read at various ages, instilling the message that "how we breathe matters". A perfect gift for nieces and nephews for example.

Kids don't think to tell you... That they can't breathe through their nose. Unless they know it is something to aim for. .... I bet you can think of someone who nibbles, eats with their mouth open, or eats each mouthful really fast so they can breathe in between. Have you ever considered it might be because they don't feel comfortable breathing through their nose? ... I wrote @roseloseshernose because I was that 7 year old who knew I was breathing through my mouth and that I snored, but "surely if it was a problem someone would have told me". I wrote the book that I should have read. But because I didn't. Because no one told me anything until I stumbled across a podcast episode 23 years later, I became really bloody passionate about education. So here I am again. Yesterday I just watched Simon Squibb's son, Aidan, excitedly show his dad my book, ROSE LOSES HER NOSE @ideas_fest . I didn't capture the actual moment as I was living it, smiling. He seemed genuinely excited to read it together with him later and I can't wait to hear what he thought. ... ROSE LOSES HER NOSE is a trojan horse for adult education. It has been almost 30 years, but I was truly overjoyed to be part of a group of different specialists coming together to learn about and discuss airway health. It is so important that medical and holistic specialists discuss different complimentary approaches and encourage education. Thanks to The Airway School (@theairwayschool ) by @doctor_aoife and @drclaresimon . What to watch for in your child... Your child may be:  👉 mouth breathing in the daytime or night (lips open & tongue down) 👉 snoring through their mouth 👉 swallowing with a 'tongue thrust swallow'  = (darts forward - open lips to check) 👉 getting colds all the time 👉 getting inflamed adenoids & tonsils 👉 getting ear infections 👉 exhausted upon waking 👉 hyperactive following this long, poor quality sleep 👉 a child who struggled to breastfeed 👉 a child with reduced tongue movement range compared to others ⚠️ DID YOU KNOW?.....that how a child breathes can impact the development of their face and airway size?  If a child is mouth breathing, their tongue drops away from the roof of their mouth. It is no longer in position to form the upper jaw as wide and forward as possible. This impacts airway size.  Other factors are: - genetics, (but we can all optimise or deteriorate based on habits),  -nutrition for healthy development,  -chewing (good luck on our ultra-processed food) and  -breastfeeding (not always possible but why everything else is so important) - both for good jaw strength and development. ... 🔴 NOTE: This post is for sign posting education. I am NOT a Doctor (not that they seem to be trained on this 🙄) ... Next steps:  1) Observe your child 2) Follow @theorthodonticspecialist on Instagram for functional advice (e.g. missed tongue ties, function training, early years orthodontics to create space etc.)  3) Follow me for more free education on healthy breathing habits 4) Educate your child on the importance of healthy breathing habits 5) Do NOT nag your child or get cross about mouth breathing. Educate, inspire and create fun games to improve breathing habits.
