PANAMA I am saddened at what transpired at the event and I hope that the producers are able to take sustainable accountability as the dialogue over this festival continues. I struggled with my own challenges traveling out of the country and was admittedly not present entirely throughout the festival. My worst nightmare as a Mexican American traveling abroad was being detained by immigration and customs enforcement, and that was the first thing I experienced upon arrival. To say I was distracted the rest of the weekend was an understatement but I tried to make the best of it. I am proud of the work I have done. The time I took to research my heritage and the legend behind Iztaccihuatl so that I could honor her in a way that was respectful and meaningful. I consulted my elders, designed the costume with a costumer who understood my intention, and every step of the way my process was: Will this read well? Will I offend? How does this story relate to my own narrative? I am grateful for the people who made my weekend beautiful with their presence, for the friends I made abroad, and for the friends who checked on me during/after.
