Sheer Encounters is a series in which we meet the characters behind our collective communities to talk about what Cape Town’s dance music and underground cultures means to them.  @roribingham is a South African performer, interdisciplinary movement artist, dancer and a prominent figure in the local art scene. He is also known as “the Father of Legacy himself” in the context of the “Legacy: Resurrection Ball” event. SC: What is a dance floor moment you still think about, and why has it stayed with you? Rori: A Dancefloor moment that has stayed with me was when I performed at Glitter Box in 2023. I remember watching the documentary and thinking ‘Wow, I want to be one of them’ and then it just so happened that I was one of the dancers for that year! SC: What pulls you back to underground music spaces again and again? Rori: The sense of freedom and the sense that the space is open. Anything goes… SC: What does the term ‘rave culture’ mean to you? Rori: A great freaking time SC: How do you think rave culture creates community in ways that other spaces don’t? Rori: Rave Culture is alternative, it’s not the norm, it’s open, it’s freeing and because these ideologies are so evident it pushes the idea of community.   SC: What do you believe makes Cape Town’s dance music culture unique? Rori: The people. We are a blend of so many cultures and our history as people is what continues to make us stand out on the global stage.
