Rooted board member Deirdre Garton has been recognized as a Community Shares of Wisconsin backyard hero! Deirdre has served on the Rooted board since 2014. She brings a passion for the welfare of youth and families to her work with Rooted that is an asset to our mission of serving youth and families by providing access to urban agriculture education, community spaces, and land to grow food. Deirdre also recently organized a farm-to-table fundraiser dinner featuring food from Troy Farm and Badger Rock Urban Farm. Rooted is grateful for the wisdom and guidance Deirdre provides to our organization, and the joyful encouragement that she shares freely. Thank you, Deirdre! @commshareswi

Rooted loves to run! If you do too, join us along with Working Draft for a fun, family-friendly 5k on Saturday May 30th. The route is simple: start at Working Draft, run to Tenny Park and soak up the springtime scenery, and return to Working Draft to cash in your free drink token. You'll also receive other run swag including seeds and a Run for Rooted hat! Proceeds go to support Rooted's school garden programming. Bring your friends and get ready to run—every step helps grow school garden programs for kids across Madison. Sign up: event calendar link in bio. @workingdraftbeer

Our Badger Rock Middle School students have been hard at work this semester in their Social Entrepreneurship class, a partnership with CEOs of Tomorrow, Inc.! Our students came up with four planting kits, doing everything from brainstorming product ideas, calculating expenses and profit, making and taste testing recipes, naming their business, creating logos, starting plants from seed, and more. This year's products include a pizza planting kit, a pickle planting kit, a plant-based ice cream flavors planting kit, and an Italian seasoning planting kit. All proceeds from the sale go directly to the students, with a percentage of their profit being donated to a social cause of their choice. https://badger-rock-ceos.square.site/ @badgerrockmiddleschool @ceos_of_tomorrow

This spring Kennedy Elementary students have been participating in the "I Grew That!" project with Rooted in partnership with the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture program. As part of this project 5th graders explored the link between food and community and were tasked with growing Marigold flowers in the classroom that would later be sold. The students were told that all proceeds from the sale of these flowers would be donated to an organization/project that helped address food insecurity or promoted agriculture education. The students were presented with several different projects and voted on one to support. They chose to donate proceeds to "We Got This" gardens in Milwaukee. Come to our plant sale TODAY and Tomorrow (May 9-10) from 10am-2pm at Mallards Stadium (2920 N. Sherman Ave). All proceeds from purchase of the Kennedy-grown Marigolds will be donated to the "We Got This" project! /troy-farm/troy-plant-sale/

🌱🌎 Last week, our School Partnerships Team brought the energy to Badger Rock Middle School for our annual Earth Day/Arbor Day pop-up! Students got hands-on with sustainability—powering a bike blender to make applesauce 🚲🍎, planting grapes and blueberries with MGE arborists 🌿, and helping create a mural celebrating food and community 🎨💚. An inspiring week of learning, creativity and teamwork! Huge shoutout to muralist Paola Mayorga and our partners at the Badger Rock Neighborhood Center and Rooted for making it all happen. 🙌

The Troy Farm Plant Sale is this weekend! Saturday and Sunday 10:00am-2:00pm both days, at the Mallards Stadium. The plant sale is an important piece of Troy Farm’s annual funding. Every locally grown seedling you buy helps us keep the farm running, including donating produce to neighborhood centers, our CSA program, and stewarding urban green space in Madison. Invite a fellow gardener, and we'll see you at the Plant Sale this weekend! Pro Tip: Our unique and popular varieties tend to go fast, so if you're looking for a specific variety we strongly encourage you to stop by on Saturday morning! You can see the full list of everything we'll have here: rootedwi.org/troy-plant-sale
