what is the idea of this cover?
deep winter as a moment paused—cold, still, slightly unstable. the kanji “冬” suspended in space, its structure shifting from rigid to soft, hinting at movement beneath stillness.
how was it made?
built from a grid echoing BRAIN’s wordmark, then extruded and distorted using rudimentary 3D tools—kept intentionally rough, resisting polish.
thoughts on japanese design?
a culture of precision and care, balanced with looseness and humor. a constant reference—often embedded subconsciously.

A few weeks ago I gave a talk at Design Thinkers conference, Canada’s largest annual graphic design conference by the Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD). I talked about designing visual identity across cultures, and finding belonging through design as a multicultural designer navigating different cities and cultures.

[Custom type] A collaboration between @meat.studio and @hrftype
Arcino Sans is a custom typeface designed for Office AIO (Office for Architecture, Interiors and Objects), an interdisciplinary design practice known for its contextually meaningful designs and modern, poetic use of space.
Capturing this contemporary classic spirit is a geometric sans typeface with classic Roman proportions — a union of timeless aesthetics and modern sensibilities. The letterforms are inspired by architectural details, with additional quirks such as flared stems and ink traps.
Arcino Sans also includes OpenType features such as case-sensitive forms and ligatures. The result is an elegant display type that speaks with confidence, suitable for headlines and subheadlines.

Ronald Tau @rontau , founder of Meat Studio @meat.studio is conducting a class about bilingual typography for @foreignpolicydesign On August 8th and 11th.
This class is organized into 4 major sections of knowledge that will help shed light in effectively using both the Chinese and Latin (English) typography in design.
Session 1:
The first session is an introduction of basic knowledge with a primer to understand basic structural differences between Chinese characters and Latin(English) letterforms.
Session 2:
Ron will teach about the pairing Chinese and English type; matching and clashing typefaces as well as managing color plus alignment, rhythm, and composition. These would be explained and conducted through examples and exercises.
