We are very happy to reveal that J. Zunz, the musical project by Mexican artist Lorena Quintanilla has revealed a new album on Rocket – a mesmerising 9 track LP called ‘Obsidiana’.
Watch the John O’Carroll made video for first single – the visceral repetition of ‘Silvia’ via Rocket’s YouTube
-
‘Obsidiana’ which is released on 29 May is ltd to 300 copies on clear vinyl and spot gloss sleeve, is available to preorder from your favourite record shop, or direct via rocketrecordings.com
-
‘Obsidiana’, the third J. Zunz album on Rocket – manages to be both more aggressive and more gentle than anything she’s previously created either on her own or in her work in Lorelle Meets The Obsolete. A study in balance, its emotional charge remains strong and intact whether on the eerie, almost Radiophonic ambience of ‘Imago’, the dancefloor-adjacent, Chris & Cosey-esque ‘Osiris’ or the abrasive, industrial-strength confrontation of ‘Silvia’. On ‘Final’ meanwhile, Lorena is joined by her only main collaborator this time around, Freddie Murphy (Father Murphy) whose trumpet and synth abstractions offer further vivid colour to ‘Obsidiana’s spectrum.
J. Zunz is celebrating the announcement of this new album with a special show:
April 17 / Tijuana / Malbouche
...and a J. Zunz European tour is in the planning for later this year.
TONIGHT, the seventh show of sixteen, we play in the beautiful surroundings of St Matthias Church, London.

The camera was not at its best tonight, @pigsx7 however absolutely were (are they ever not?!?)! They catapulted @thecrescentyork into orbit and took us all along with them. An absolute tonic, as always. The addition of Detroit to the setlist was a surprise, in the best possible way - bloody awesome stuff! Sound was immense (thanks to @bridgewilliamssound for bringing the skills!). @merylstreek_ brought a heavy intensity that filled the room, don’t turn up late and miss them in Cardiff!!
The usual thank yous to everyone on and off stage who make nights like this happen. No matter how big or how small your part, we appreciate everything you do to keep live music and independent venues alive and kicking. 🙌🙌🙌

SMOTE, once a solo endeavor by Daniel Foggin, now expanded to a fuller ensemble blends traditional instrumentation — creaking strings, funeral drums, somber winds — with thunderous synth work and desolate guitar to craft drone and dirge.
A full-scale psychic voyage into the ether and a drone-and-repetition-fuelled series of incantations that takes simple, primal ingredients and utilises them for the purposes of aural sorcery, summoning spectres and revelations aplenty in its wake.
