It’s a great week ahead at the Star & Shadow. Take a look at what’s coming up and check the link in our bio for the full programme. 11–17 May 2026 On Wednesday, COMMUNITY KITCHEN returns with a warm, welcoming evening of food, conversation and shared activity across the building. Come along, meet people and get involved. Also on Wednesday, the FIX IT CAFÉ is back. Bring along broken items and see if they can be repaired. Our Thursday film is Paul Schrader’s visually stunning, collage like portrait of acclaimed Japanese author and playwright Yukio Mishima, MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS. The film explores the inner turmoil and contradictions of a man attempting an impossible harmony between self, art and society. On Friday we have Marija Kavtaradze’s SLOW. Dancer Elena and sign language interpreter Dovydas meet and form a new relationship as they learn to build their own kind of intimacy. On Saturday, come along to the latest edition of the Star & Shadow BOARD GAMES CLUB. Whether you’re a seasoned strategist or just board game curious, come roll the dice with us. During the day on Sunday, the café is open from 12pm with ART CLUB and CREATIVE WRITING CLUB. Then on Sunday evening, get ready for another classic Hollywood icon double bill, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES and NIAGARA. First, two showgirls navigate romance, wealth and friendship across Paris, before jealousy and murder simmer beside the thunderous Niagara Falls. #StarAndShadowCinema #NewcastleEvents #WhatsOnNewcastle #IndependentCinema #CommunityCinema

In a few weeks time we are screening one of the classics of world cinema, Robert Bresson's 1956 masterpiece A MAN ESCAPED. With the simplest of concepts and sparest of techniques, Bresson made one of the most suspenseful jailbreak films of all time. Based on the account of an imprisoned French Resistance leader, this taut and methodical marvel follows the fictional Fontaine’s single-minded pursuit of freedom, detailing the planning and execution of his escape with gripping precision. A  work of intense spirituality and humanity, the film remains one of Bresson's most acclaimed and influential works. Sunday 7th June at 7.30pm (doors at 7pm). Coming this July to the Star & Shadow Cinema, Michel Gondry’s ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. After a painful breakup, Joel discovers that his former partner Clementine has undergone a procedure to erase all memories of their relationship. In response, he impulsively decides to do the same. But as his memories begin disappearing one by one, Joel finds himself desperately trying to hold onto the moments they shared. Blending surreal science fiction, heartbreaking romance and dreamlike visual invention, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND remains one of the most beloved films of the 2000s. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet deliver extraordinary performances in a story about memory, loss and the painful impossibility of forgetting the people who shape us. Funny, devastating and endlessly imaginative, it’s a film that only grows more powerful with time. Coming this June to the Star & Shadow Cinema, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s CHINESE ROULETTE. A masterclass in tension, manipulation and psychological cruelty, Fassbinder’s chilling chamber drama unfolds over a single weekend in a secluded country house where a wealthy couple unexpectedly arrive with their respective lovers, only to discover they have all been brought together by the couple’s disabled daughter. What begins as icy social satire gradually spirals into a vicious emotional power game, with buried resentments and humiliations pushed to the surface through a series of increasingly cruel confrontations. Elegant, unsettling and razor sharp, CHINESE ROULETTE is Fassbinder at his most controlled and venomous. With its stunning visual compositions, oppressive atmosphere and unforgettable final act, the film remains one of the great works of 1970s European cinema. Tomorrow at the Star & Shadow Cinema, experience Paul Schrader’s extraordinary MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS on the big screen. Blending biography, theatre and literary adaptation, the film moves through the final day of writer Yukio Mishima’s life while unfolding scenes from his novels in vividly stylised sets and dreamlike fragments. Schrader constructs a portrait of a man torn between art, politics, beauty and self invention, creating something far more ambitious than a conventional biopic. Ken Ogata gives a commanding central performance, surrounded by some of the most striking visuals of 1980s cinema. John Bailey’s cinematography, Eiko Ishioka’s iconic production design and Philip Glass’s hypnotic score combine to create a film of overwhelming atmosphere and precision. Elegant, unsettling and completely singular, MISHIMA remains one of Schrader’s greatest works.
