Excited to share our latest 3D printed wall prototype! Comprised of 4 custom parts, the prototype involved development of both a multi-agent design algorithm and a custom FGF additive manufacturing software framework for large format robotic 3d printing - enabling high resolution detail in large-format prints. My book “Behavioural Production” is finally out! I’m excited to share years of research and projects exploring my passion for generative design and robotic manufacturing. The book provides an in-depth survey of our semi-autonomous approaches to design, fabrication, and collective robotic construction, and the thought-provoking ideas they inspire! The book showcases over 50 projects and 200 full-color illustrations, including our pioneering aerial additive manufacturing research published in the journal Nature. In the context of the emerging Fourth Industrial Revolution and advancements in AI and robotic construction, I advocate for expanding creative agency within modes of production, computation, and robot control to create distinctive and situated work. The book explores design through the orchestration of spatiotemporal events, employing a behavior-based approach to architectural design that extends to individual and swarm-based robotic methods for additive manufacturing. In an industrialized world where traditional craftsmanship is marginalized and unable to scale to societal needs, this book speculates on bringing scalable forms of creativity into making, challenging architecture’s historical reliance on mass production. “Behavioural Production” argues for the authoring of semi-autonomous processes, enabling more open design engagement than automated approaches allow and potentially offering a more adaptive approach to our built environment. I hope this book fosters dialogue around how we can integrate emerging autonomous technologies thoughtfully without forsaking established practices or uncritically adopting processes beyond our control. Excited to participate this Saturday in the @acadiaorg ACADIA Board of Directors’ ACSA Special Session: AI Entanglements at @acsanationa ACSA’s 112th Annual Meeting in Vancouver. On behalf of Penn’s Weitzman School of Design’s Department of Architecture @weitzman_arch , I will be showcasing pioneering work in artificial intelligence from our Autonomous Manufacturing Research Lab and MSD-RAS program @weitzman_msdras alongside co-presenters @Leightonbeaman , @dcupk , @Materialpropositions , @robstuartsmith , @shelbyedoyle , @benjamin_ennemoser , @biaynabogosian . AI in Autonomous Systems explores architectural design and pedagogy through the leveraging of various degrees of autonomy in 3D modelling, robotic fabrication and collective robotic construction activities. AI in this work encompasses a broad range of computational methods including deep learning, deep reinforcement learning, multi-agent systems, genetic algorithms and more. More fundamentally, much of the work operates through custom applications of computer vision, allowing degrees of autonomous perception to inform site analysis, generative design, optimization, robotic fabrication and collective robotic construction activities. Several design approaches are presented from the Autonomous Manufacturing Research Lab and Penn’s post-professional master’s program – MSD-RAS.
