HOW TO DIE LAUGHING
(for any number of performers, living or departing)
Choose a day to begin (preferably one no one is prepared for).
On Day 0, Laugh continuously for 1 minute.
On Day 1, laugh for 2 minutes. On Day 2, laugh for 3 minutes. On Day 3, laugh for 5 minutes. On Day 4, laugh for 8 minutes.
Continue increasing the duration of laughter by the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, 1597, 2584 … minutes, and so on)
Laughter must be continuous, though you may breathe, wheeze, sob, or levitate. Falling down is permitted. As is standing up again.
If/when your laughter exceeds:
the world’s individual endurance record (currently just over 4 hours, to be exceeded on Day 13 with 6 hours, 17 minutes of continuous individual laughter),
and/or
the world’s collective endurance record (currently just over 36 hours, to be broken on Day 17, with 43 hours, 4 minutes of continuous group laughter), you may declare yourself a Master of Low-Probability Endurance Laughter.
If at any point you forget how to laugh, begin again from Day 0 or remain silent until the laughter returns from wherever it went.
The piece ends when the performer:
stops participating,
achieves enlightenment,
or joins the ranks of Ascendent Endurance Laughing Masters and dies laughing.
