You may have already dreamt this book, so I’m just reminding you to check @aaab_illustration ’s fantastic new book ‘An Illustrated History of Urban Legends’. I wrote this track for the animation Adam put together. Does anyone know how to make something sound eerie but not ghost-type spooky? @flyingeyebooks

Nowness // Komorebi This is the third project I’ve worked on with Steve Atkins. The music was all written around a texture that felt integral to the piece, though by the end, we’d removed it entirely. I loved the idea of each motif acting as a different biome or character, reflecting the current world of the visuals. Stands as one of my favourite pieces of pre-Soothe2 music. Nowness // JNBY Reverb I worked on this with Jim Demuth and Nowness Asia for JNBY clothing. Jim’s vision for this was project so inspiring, and I always love a project where we can tie the edit to the music. NB that tiny little snare towards the end of track is the best thing I’ll ever do. BBC // Nature Dates with Chris Packham and Jack Fincham I genuinely remember watching the first season of Disenchantment and thinking, 'I hope I never get asked to write music like this,' purely as it was and still remains miles from my wheelhouse. Not long after, Posy from Luca asked me to do precisely that. Ultimately, I failed to write something good enough and with the right energy, so we changed tack and went for something more funk-inspired. I was really pleased with what we decided on in the end, but the genre of 'Jazz Manouche' still stands as my white whale... One day maybe… Made for @BBC Directed by @posyd Produced by @livproctor Music by Rob Martland #mediacomposition #mediacomposer #composer #documentary #BBC #chrispackham #jackfincham

Tiffany & Co. // Outset Art Fund The track used on this I'd quickly titled ‘Swamp Thing', and was written originally for a documentary trailer that never came out. Something about swamps + Tiffany & Co feels wrong, but the universe/destiny/divine intervention obviously had other plans. Tate // Pablo Picasso’s The Three Dancers This is another one that I worked on with Luca films. One of the tracks on this was written for the first sync job I ever worked on, it’s a track called Tambiosi (named after a quote from the doc it was originally written for) and to this day it’s definitely the most synced piece of music I’ve made. Channel 4 // Random Acts with Jordan Stephens This was the first thing I worked on that ended up on TV, which still feels kind of mind-blowing. Working with Jim is consistently great, and he always pushes me to explore styles of music I’d never considered writing in. He’s always made me think about how we can wall ourselves off from creative areas and ways of thinking, often without even realising. I still remember the pang of pure fear I felt when Jim sent me a Jon Brion piece as a reference. Vogue // Open Minded with Kendall Jenner Sharing a credits list with one of the Kardashians feels like proof that none of this is real. I wrote the music for this about a week before Posy got in touch, asking if I had any music that would fit the brief. I really had no expectations for this track, so it was cool that it found a place so quickly. Icom Magazine // Matt Smith Profile Worked on this for John Balsom - it was great let loose and write something instinctual on this one. I remember John asking me to make the piano riff sound as though it was coming through an a huge amplifier, but I don’t think I pushed it even half as far as I should have looking back. Still really happy with this track though. It’s one of those pieces reminds me that strengths best come through when the focus is solely just to feel something and then respond creatively. Dior // Les Petite Mains Worked on this with the Luca team and as usual had to push myself in a direction I’d never explored. I’m still really happy with this one and I think it was the first time I used my own guitar playing on a project for work. There was a challenge on this one due to the edit being locked, and I had to write really incidentally in the middle section, funnily enough it’s actually my favourite part of the piece. Wired // Shenzhen: The Silicon Valley of Hardware 7 years ago this came out and it was a huge joy and a real moment for me, mainly due to working with Jim Demuth for the first time. Through working on this project, I built my a lot of trust in my creative inclinations, particularly from working with someone who believed in me and my ability to make weird vibes like Jim did. Though I definitely seemed to lack the ability to write anything that didn’t sound moody back then, though honestly I think I still suffer from this particular curse. This one allowed me to step out of seeing myself as purely a hobbyist; it’s a project I’ll forever be grateful for being a part of. Nowness // Portrait of a Place - Epinard by Steve Atkins Worked on this with my long time collaborator and friend Steve Atkins. I remember Steve telling me how he’d met a guy while travelling Japan that he’d like to make a film about, and this is that film. It was a huge privilege to work with Steve on this. When working with only one other creative voice on a project, the pressure to do the best you possibly can oddly increases - I think it’s in making sure that their love and vision for the project is met with just as much care and attention on your end - it's in making sure you honour their work as much as you possibly can. In the end I was really pleased with the collage of songs and sounds that I wrote. I think when I imagine the music that I’m mostly likely to resonate with, my mind comes to something approximating what I wrote for this film.
