Don’t cancel me T1Ds but this is what I’d tell you if I didn’t want to hurt your feelings
1. It won’t be the diabetes that stops you. Most of the diabetes “firsts” (Everest, Marathon, NBA, Pregnancy, Olympic Gold, etc.) were done without pumps, cgms or modern insulins.
2. Nobody is coming to save you. You need to be an expert in worst-case-scenarios. Be prepared for the worst-case and be surprised when things aren’t as bad as you prepped for.
3. If they can’t accept you with diabetes, congrats, you just saved yourself a ton of time and heartache.
4. If it wasn’t diabetes, it would be something else.
5. Diabetes isn’t easy, or fair, but we aren’t promised easy or fair. Life is just one set of insoluble problems, one after the other after the other. Once you accept this, everything gets easier.
6. If you were born at any other time in history, you’d be dead. Enjoy the time you have because it’s a literal miracle.
7. The highest levels of success don’t have disability accommodations. You’ll have to figure it out.
8. The brightest candle burns out the fastest. Take your time, diabetes creators.
9. The biggest key to a successful life with diabetes is environmental mastery. Look it up.
10. Making friends with diabetes will lower your HbA1c, increase your time in range, and save you money on your prescriptions.
11. Disease states are not a zero-sum game. Just because your diabetes is autoimmune instead of caused by lifestyle won’t make you socially acceptable. Mind your business.
12. People hate on Dr. Bernstein but he lived until he was 90 with t1d for 77 years with an HbA1c under 6.
13. You’re going to need money, forever. Sometimes way more than you think. You don’t have to be employed but you can never be broke.
I’m preaching a little bit on these sensor changes but today we had the good fortune of a site and sensor change. Sometimes things being difficult just means you’re doing it! You’re alive! That’s so great.
.
Also thank you to @healthy_sites they sent me these patches that you can put on your inflamed sites and sensors. I’ve been using them and they are actually quite nice.
Spent April surrounded by friends, touching grass, renting cars, getting quiet, hugging trees, observing death blooms, sending loving kindness, shipping work, speaking publicly and getting buckets. Swipe to the end for some awesome trees I got to talk to.
.
This is the way things are right now. If you’re going through it, you’re not alone. It will change.
Mindful Monday advice from @ryanserhant - more on equanimity later but I felt like SENSOR CHANGE IT LIKE SERHANT was applicable here.
