Studio Heim is here! Thanks to the amazing team at Swell Design Group, and in particular Liam and Michael, for creating a new vision for our studio. Taking cues from our work and design process, they have developed a brand that reflects our diversity of language and creativity in approach to architecture. Like our new logo, Heim will adjust and shift, so we always remain forward thinking. • • • #studioheim #heim #placesforpeople @swelldesigngroup @_studioheim_

What’s in a name? When selecting a new name, it was important to us that it both referenced our past and represented our future. While predominantly Irish in decent, Rob’s family name interestingly began back in Germany as ‘Heimerich’. Noting that our core focus in architecture is designing warm and inviting homely spaces, it seemed fitting to choose Heim (home). • • • #studioheim #heim #placesforpeople @swelldesigngroup @_studioheim_

Welcome to the new us! Acknowledging that, nearly ten years on, the design work that Rob Henry Architects (RHA) now produce is greater than the sum of any one designer, it seems fitting to rebrand into a more illustrative representation of our approach and focus. We would like to introduce you to Studio Heim. • • • #studioheim #heim #placesforpeople @swelldesigngroup @_studioheim_

Jingston House - New House WINNER OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS ACT CHAPTER 2022 MALCOM MOIR AND HEATHER SUTHERLAND AWARD FOR RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE – HOUSES NEW Located on a site embedded with family memories, the Jingston house, previously owned by the client’s grandparents, replaces what was a tired, and poorly orientated cottage. Working with the sloping terrain, the spaces are segmented into a series of interconnected levels that step up with the site to allow for continuous association to rear landscape, whilst also maximising views and delivering privacy from the street. At the core of the C-shaped design is a verdant courtyard that provides a sense of tranquillity within. A restrained external material palette of raked and painted brickwork, grooved lightweight cladding, and timber walls and soffits is a nod to the original mid-century architectural gems within the suburb. The form plays with subtle angles, folds and projections, vertical and horizontal textures, and interconnecting planes to envelop the courtyard. A circular cut-out acts as a moving light sculpture throughout the day both externally and internally. • • • Photographer: @benkingphotography #RHA #robhenryarchitects #canberraarchitecture #australianarchitecture #jingstonhouse #whitebrick #timber #timberceiling #moongate #circle #photooftheday #architecture #design #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #architect #architectureporn #home #archilovers #homedesign #archdaily #interiorarchitecture

Stepping House - New House WINNER OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS ACT CHAPTER 2020 AWARD FOR RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE - HOUSES NEW Stepping House backs onto Mount Ainslie and has been designed to blend with the native landscape. Constructed in stone, timber and charcoal cladding, the single storey light filled home steps down the sloping site. Each living space is on its own level and has its own connection into the garden. A brick floor defines the circulation spine of the house. The interiors are a combination of white, soft green, and timber veneer; a further reflection of the landscape context. • • • Photographer: @benkingphotography Builder: @walmsleybuilding #RHA #robhenryarchitects #canberraarchitecture #australianarchitecture #steppinghouse #steps #stone #photooftheday #architecture #design #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #architect #architectureporn #home #archilovers #homedesign #archdaily #interiorarchitecture

Concrete House - New House WINNER OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS ACT CHAPTER 2019 MALCOLM MOIR AND HEATHER SUTHERLAND AWARD FOR RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE - HOUSES NEW The Concrete House is a statement of endurance, resoluteness, and sustainability. Every design decision, material selection, and construction detail has been painstakingly considered to ensure the dwelling’s lifespan extends well beyond average and can also meet future pressures resultant from climate change. The minimalist aesthetic of the house’s form and materials is not ostentatious, but rather a restrained expression of the contemporary family home. • • • Photographer: @lightstudies Builder: @preferredbuilders_canberra #RHA #robhenryarchitects #canberraarchitecture #australianarchitecture #concretehouse #concrete #metal#photooftheday #architecture #design #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #architect #architectureporn #home #archilovers #homedesign #archdaily #interiorarchitecture

Blue Sky House - Alts and Adds WINNER OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS ACT CHAPTER 2022 THE ROBERT FOSTER AWARD FOR LIGHT IN ARCHITECTURE Sitting within a quiet col-de-sac in Canberra's inner north is Blue Sky House. Optimising the northern aspect, this addition allows light to come into the newly added living and master bedroom spaces, which previously was not achievable. By flipping the orientation of the simple truss, this addition is striking in both form and design from exterior to interior; with high raked ceilings casting the eye to the sky above. Taking inspiration on colours found on the cottage, the blue acts as a recessive quality for the new form, ensuring it is subtly tucked behind the original home. Keeping this same tone flowing into the interior, allows for a striking yet cohesive space throughout both old and new. Through simple planning and detailing, this design has revitalised the existing home while standing in unique contrast and allowing a better relationship of spaces, light and family living. • • • Photographer: @benkingphotography Builder: @builtbydrew #RHA #robhenryarchitects #canberraarchitecture #australianarchitecture #blueskyhouse #addition #renovation #photooftheday #architecture #design #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #architect #architectureporn #home #archilovers #homedesign #archdaily #interiorarchitecture

The Loft House - Alts and Adds WINNER OF THE MASTER BUILDERS ASSOCIATION 2018 RENOVATION/EXTENSION AWARD Nestled amidst the leafy streets of Canberra’s inner north, the Loft House addition delivers a warm, light filled living space with a ‘lofty’ retreat above. Located behind a compact 1950’s Riley Newsum prefabricated house, the addition emerges up into the skyline with a sympathetic gable form. With it’s high raked ceilings and exposed rafters, the addition remains true to the arts and crafts character of the existing house. Recycled timber flooring and white washed plywood add texture and warmth. Delicate in materiality, yet bold in character, the addition inspires open living with its connection between living spaces and outdoor garden rooms. Taking advantage of a northerly orientation, the interiors are light, elegant, and inviting. White painted custom Scottish bond reverse brick veneer walls create interest and texture internally, whilst enhancing the thermal mass within the house. This, combined with high density wall insulation, provides warmth in winter, while operable skylights allow night purging to keep the house cool in summer. Unique planning and detailing has revitalised a modest home into one that is bold and invigorating, allowing for connectivity between spaces and improving family living. • • • Photographer: @lightstudies Builder: @walmsleybuilding #RHA #robhenryarchitects #canberraarchitecture #australianarchitecture #thelofthouse #loft #timber #photooftheday #architecture #design #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #architect #architectureporn #home #archilovers #homedesign #archdaily #interiorarchitecture

Reid House Renovation - Alts and Adds This original red brick heritage cottage in Reid had been extended insensitively in the 1980’s and required a significant overhaul to improve its orientation and connectivity with the rear yard. Sensitive restoration of the existing cottage and a rework of planning and interior detailing of the addition has turned this cottage into a warm and inviting family home. A feature of the new spaces is the timber lined ceiling coffers with openable skylights that draw additional light into the living areas. • • • Photographer: @benkingphotography Builder: @laggnerconstructions #RHA #robhenryarchitects #canberraarchitecture #australianarchitecture #reidhouserenovation #brick #photooftheday #architecture #design #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #architect #architectureporn #home #archilovers #homedesign #archdaily #interiorarchitecture

Ribbon House - Alts and Adds Winner of the Master Builders Association 2019 Renovation/Extension Commendation Situated on a leafy suburban site, the Ribbon House has been carefully wrapped around the existing established trees to enhance the indoor / outdoor connection. A mix of natural timber and white/black washed timber cladding reduces the scale of the two-storey form, peeling off in places, much like a ribbon on a box. This is a smart family home with modest detailing of beautiful materials. • • • Photographer: @lightstudies Builder: @walmsleybuilding #RHA #robhenryarchitects #canberraarchitecture #australianarchitecture #ribbonhouse #curve #timber #whitebrick #photooftheday #architecture #design #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #architect #architectureporn #home #archilovers #homedesign #archdaily #interiorarchitecture

Courtyard House - New House WINNER OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS ACT CHAPTER 2019 AWARD FOR RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE - HOUSES NEW WINNER OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS ACT CHAPTER 2019 AWARD FOR SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE The Courtyard House is a modestly designed dwelling set in the leafy suburb of Curtin. At the heart of the design is the central Japanese inspired courtyard to which all the living areas and walkways open into. The green roofed central core is flanked by two skillion roofed buildings that provide high raked ceilings to the living areas and bedrooms. All spaces have north facing windows and are cross ventilated. The house has a series of sustainable technologies including a Teslar Powerwall home battery solar storage system, heat pump hydronic heating and domestic hot water system, and thermally broken high performance aluminium windows. Many materials were also salvaged from the old cottage and reused, including bricks for new interior and exterior walls and paving, and timber roof battens for cladding battens and slatted screens and fencing. • • • Photographer: @lightstudies Builder: Bal Building #RHA #robhenryarchitects #canberraarchitecture #australianarchitecture #courtyardhouse #courtyard #timber #redbrick #photooftheday #architecture #design #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #architect #architectureporn #home #archilovers #homedesign #archdaily #interiorarchitecture

Box House - New House WINNER OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS ACT CHAPTER 2015 MALCOLM MOIR AND HEATHER SUTHERLAND AWARD FOR RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE - HOUSES NEW Situated in a remnant section of native bushland, the Box House has been deliberately designed to blend into the landscape using scale and colour. The narrow north facing two-storey form, clad in dark grey sheet metal, is barely visible upon entrance to the site, and was situated in a natural clearing to minimise impact on the existing vegetation. The house is simple and compact in form and planning. The linear ‘box’ is carved and segmented to create the spaces and volumes within. To allow connection with the sloping landscape, the ground floor plan has been designed as a series of stepping floor plates with different programs: entry/guest area; kitchen/dining area; and double height living area. The first floor plan opens onto the living area below and consists of a large flexible use space, currently a living / study area, and a private bedroom suite. The Box House is an illustration of a low budget compact living typology where sustainable principles have been incorporated into the design without compromising its bold architectural aesthetic. Flexibility in the interior design enables this house to freely adapt and change over its lifespan based on its occupants’ needs. • • • Photographer: @lightstudies Builder: WQM Building Group #RHA #robhenryarchitects #canberraarchitecture #australianarchitecture #boxhouse #metal #panelrib #photooftheday #architecture #design #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #architect #architectureporn #home #archilovers #homedesign #archdaily #interiorarchitecture
