“The Oxford Companion could stand as a sort of metaphor for David Wondrich’s career, writes @RobertOSimonson in his latest for Imbibe. “His influence in cocktail circles is so complete at this point that it almost resembles wallpaper. It’s all over, but you can’t see it for its everywhereness.” Head to the link in our bio to read more about how Wondrich (@splificator ) has helped shaped the cocktail world as we know it today. 📸 @ericmedsker

“A Proper Drink,” my 2016 history of the cocktail revival, published by @tenspeedpress and edited by @egtimberlake , turns 10 this autumn. To commemorate the anniversary, I’ve put together a series of talks at @bryantslounge in my new hometown of Milwaukee. It kicks off Monday with an appearance by @kingcocktl . This got me to thinking about the “A Proper Drink” book tour, which took me to Cincinnati, San Francisco, Tulsa, Houston, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Boston, Berlin and elsewhere, from September to December of that year. The world was about to get measurably worse in ways none of us could have predicted, but for that brief window, it felt like a few well-placed, well-wrought cocktails could help improve civilization in some small way. I think they still can.

Congratulations to @imbibe on their 20th anniversary. The publication remains as vital a member of the drinks industry today as when it debuted in 2006. We are all the better for it still being around to provide us all with excellent, thoughtful and in-depth coverage of the people and places that make the cocktail, spirits, wine, beer and coffee (and occasionally soda!) industries great. Personal thanks to publisher Karen Foley and editor @cocktailchron who have always been a pleasure to work with. I’ve written for Imbibe since 2009. (Imbibe has always been a faithful supporter and employer of the best drinks writers out there.) And I’m proud to be a part of the 20th Anniversary issue, in which I profile the great @splificator . Believe it or not, David has never been given the feature treatment in Imbibe! We fixed that!

We here at @themixwithrobertsimonson and @themartiniexpo are in favor of any reason to celebrate the Martini. Especially when it involves our @themartiniexpo partender @bartendermagazine and one of our favorite Martini gins, @tanquerayusa . So, welcome to the first Martini Month! Any bar across the country can participate by registering and offering a signature Tanqueray Martini on their menu during the month of June. The deadline to register is May 21. Go to bartender.com to find out more!

New York, you have one fewer place to buy great, inexpensive bread. @caputobakery on Court Street, Brooklyn, has closed after 124 years. No real explanation. We noticed a “temporarily closed” sign in the window last Friday when we passed by. That has since been replaced by a permanent confirmation. I don’t know how many loaves of peerless Italian bread I bought there over the decades. Too many to count. So many seeded loaves, buns and “Sinatras,” and the occasional onion roll and chocolate birthday cake. Fair prices, friendly service. What an irreparable loss to the neighborhood.

The are four or five restaurants in New York that have afforded me the most happy moments in this life and @donohues64 is one of them. It is very sad to see them go, but if the place has to go, I’m glad the owner is going on her own terms. I’m honored to have written this story for @grubstreet . It’s been a bittersweet week for this reporter. New York keeps changing. It’s the nature of the beast. I’m glad there will still be a Donohue’s in Westhampton and maybe more to come with the same wonderful food and service. And I pray that the person who takes over the Lexington Avenue space keeps it exactly as is.

The best stories are the ones that percolate over years. I’ve been going to Sam’s Pizzeria on Court Street for decades, and have know its owner Lou for as long. And I have known @georgiaevefulton for 12 years, ever since she took a position at @longislandbar mere months after it opened. Finally, I’ve been aware of Fulton’s designs on Sam’s for more than a year. So, in a way, this story for @grubstreet and @nymag is two decades in the making. I’m honored Georgia and Lou trusted me to tell it. And can’t wait until Sam’s 2.0 opens for business.
