Inspiring energy at the Mr Bongo party yesterday. Big up to Dave, Matt, Jane, Gareth and all the Mr Bongo team and all the Offie Mag team too. So much fun to DJ there alongside the team, Rob Sevier (The Numero Group), The Handson Family, Poly Ritmo, Dean Marsh and Miche. Check the clips of my DJ set with tunes from Curió Curió on Mr Bongo, Gil sm’s remix of Lance Ferguson’s version of ‘Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong’, a Flowdan dubplate blend, Mala & Magugu dubplate and Kuzco. As it was a one hour DJ set, it has got me excited to play a longer DJ set at the new Tru Thoughts club night at A L P H A B E T in Brighton on Friday 29th May. Yesterday was nice to see how so many people are part of the independent music community in Brighton and beyond. I saw and spoke to many. Big up to everyone down there. So, continuing the series of A to Z posts inspired by the name of the A L P H A B E T venue, where the new Tru Thoughts club night ‘Our><Connection’ is launching on Friday 29th May, we go to: E for Edit I have been doing Edits specifically for my DJ sets for a number of years. I make at least one Nirobi Edit for every gig I do, so I have a special track specifically for that gig / event / audience. I played Deodato - Also Sprach Zarathustra 2001 on Unfold radio this week as I recently watched Peter Sellers ‘Being There’ and was reminded of the tune. It is such a good film. I watched it when I was a young teenager and found it both funny and fascinating but have not watched it for about 10 years and this time watched it with my teenage son who also really enjoyed it. SLIGHT FILM SPOLER ALERT: Although it satirically shows how an innocent and sheltered adult can get into positions of power, watching it now I felt parallels with how the likes of Trump, Farage and Johnson can be propped up by billionaires and their media lapdogs to be portrayed as people who have knowledge and people believe their lies. I love the design on this album too. The CTI branded inner sleeve looks great with the slight indent to show the actual record. #deodato #petersellers

Shakti Jazz explores the relationship between ancient South Asian meditation, sonics and spiritual jazz through improvisation. Drawing on Tara Lily’s broader practice as a musician working across jazz, electronica and South Asian musical traditions, the series has been presented at Glastonbury, The Turner Gallery, Delhi Art Week, Brick Lane Jazz Festival and Space Talk, as well as on radio platforms including Worldwide FM, NTS and The Lot Radio NYC. Really nice to catch up with Espen Horne visiting us from Norway at the Tru Thoughts office in Brighton. We worked with Espen releasing the Kinny & Horne album ‘Forgetting To Remember’ with Kinny’s amazing vocals and Espen’s quality Jazz / Soul / Hip Hop influenced production. Diesler did a re-work of the album track ‘Queen of Boredness’ on Kinny’s follow up album and that subsequently got synched to a scene in Big Little Lies (I recommend checking the first series). We saw how that that helped get more ears on the releases. Espen has recently released a really good album on Dom Servini’s Wah Wah 45s label. Check the track Bakeren featuring Brighton based Faye Houston...it is a tune on constant repeat for me since release. Always nice to catch up with an artist who helped us build the foundations of the label in the early years by working with us to release their songs. Popped into the Rarekind record shop in Brighton today to drop an A3 poster for the Our Connection night at Alphabet and of course ended up asking for some recommendations from Ewan and bought lots of new and recent music. I online shop and use Bandcamp but nothing beats shopping in person for picking up tunes that the algorithm keeps away from you (I’m getting a few too many food vlogger clips right now!). Rarekind is such a brilliant shop and fair prices across the board too (always worth digging in the crates for quality tunes that are not expensive). Good to see that Mr Bongo is now opening up as a record store again in Brighton too. Looking forward to DJing at their session 1pm-9pm on Friday 14th May. I am on 6pm-7pm if you are about. If you are in London on Saturday 9th May Tru Thoughts will be repping at the Indie Label Market amongst many of my favourite labels. Remembering Ty on the 6th anniversary of his passing. This first clip always amazes me, as it was a few months before we released the track on Tru Thoughts but he had the crowd doing a dance routine to it like it was a classic already. I remember him saying to me before the gig that there was going to be crowd participation when he did this tune and I was thinking but no one knows the tune yet! Ty really knew how to get a crowd on his side. I regularly wonder what Ty’s opinion would be on certain events, as he always spoke his mind online. Rest In Peace Ty. #ty #hiphop #ukrap

As I do not speak on the microphone when I DJ it was a way to get a hype up shout out for the night and Brighton dance floor crew. Plenty of interesting experiences getting specials over the years too.
