My research into South Carolina beer history took me to Walhalla this weekend, which was home to a pioneering lager brewery back in the 1870s and 1880s. More than a century later they are making lager beer in Walhalla again (and IPAs, porters, and sours) at @freehousebeerwal — and tasty wood-fired pizzas, too.
Right nearby is the St. John’s Lutheran Church, built ca. 1860 by John Kaufmann, who later founded and operated the brewery, and just up the road the never-finished Stumphouse Tunnel, which was supposed to take the Blue Ridge Railroad into Tennessee but ran out of funds just before the Civil War.

Got a chance to sneak in and check out @ladder13_ in Columbia SC yesterday. That's the kind of adaptive reuse I can get behind. The restaurant occupies the old bays that once held fire trucks, and the old fire training tower behind now house multi-level hotel suites.
And of course there's a big wood-fired oven in the kitchen...

I am totally beguiled by the grouper Reuben at @rappbarchs : pastrami-brined grouper with red cabbage, swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on a rye milk bun. Genius.
