✨ An enchanting night at @confluxfestival 2025 ✨
Together with the incredible @rob_bothof , @elektrovolt_sound (Jimi Hellinga), and the vocal ensemble led by @idamyraida (Myra Ida van der Veen) and @wowtermol (Wouter Mol), we turned ‘Piano / Forte’ into a ritualistic moment @brutus.rotterdam — commissioned by the festival.
The haunting sounds of the piano-harps swinging in the air, the hurdy-gurdy with electronics, combined with the celestial voices of Eva Luna, Tara, Arie, Elizabete, Marilena, Aurélie, Myra and Wouter , made it an unforgettable experience.
Huge thanks to the amazing singers, everyone who trusted and supported us, and to Conflux Festival for the freedom to create. 🙏

Especially for Conflux 2025, artists Mike Rijnierse, Rob Bothof, and Jimi Hellinga present a newly commissioned performance that reimagines their installation Piano / Forte as a powerful, ritualistic experience. For this one-time occasion, the artists collaborate with a vocal ensemble led by Wouter Mol and Myra-Ida van der Veen.
Piano / Forte is a sound sculpture by Mike Rijnierse and Rob Bothof. In this performance, two pianos, stripped of their keys and supporting parts, swing like pendulums in the air. The oscillating motion causes the strings to resonate, revealing the sonic body of the piano. For Conflux, multi-instrumentalist Jimi Hellinga joins with hurdy-gurdy and electronics.
Expect a multitude of resonances and reverberations in Brutus’ Cathedral. Tickets on sale through our ticketshop.

In this work I used a randomized cross hatching technique for the shading. It is a highly inefficient method and takes a very long time to get an even coverage, but it pays off in my oppionion. Seeing the first manifestations of the ghost and characteristic drawing style of the code vs machine vs material.

I have loosely based the vertical scattering of positions on the Pareto distribution by Italian civil engineer, economist, and sociologist Vilfredo Pareto. Originally used to describe distribution of wealth in a society it is commonly used to simulate social, quality control, scientific and geophysical phenomena;
The Pareto principle or "80:20 rule" stating that 80% of outcomes are due to 20% of causes fits a wide range of cases, including natural phenomena, and human activities (and machine drawings).
