This book is published on occasion of the exhibition “Secession Ornamentation” at the @viennasecession
29 November 2025 – 22 February 2026.
“Some of Cevdet Erek’s site-specific installations and sonic environments, placed at the intersection of sound, sculpture, and architecture, evolve around the idea of ‘sound ornamentation’. In his installations sound is not background but architecture itself – something built, inhabited, and experienced by bodies in motion.
The exhibition is accompanied by a publication that features an essay by writer Ramona Heinlein and offers an overview of Erek’s projects from the past fifteen years that include sound ornamentation ideas. The artistic intervention consists of a poster showing Erek's design for the sound ornamentation on the façade of the Secession.” -from Secession website

On view at Secession in Vienna until February 22nd, Cevdet Erek’s Secession Ornamentation is a site-specific installation that explores sound as architecture — not as background, but as something built, inhabited, and experienced through the body. Drawing on Adolf Loos’s Ornament and Crime, Erek reclaims ornamentation as a temporal and vibratory structure, transforming rhythm into a tool for perception, orientation, and collective presence.
For this exhibition, Erek “ornamentates” the Secession’s façade with symmetrical loudspeakers, turning the building itself into an audible surface. Inside, tactile wood reliefs modeled after Braille symbols invite touch, foregrounding bodily awareness and accessibility. Across spaces, sound becomes a shared architecture, dissolving boundaries between listener and composer, visitor and site.
Part of a long-term dialogue with local histories and architectures — from Sharjah to Marrakech, Çanakkale to Baden-Baden — this project also marks Erek’s return to Vienna, following his 2010 installation at Palais Erdödy-Fürstenberg.
With the kind support of Kira A. Princess of Prussia Foundation and SAHA.

Look Closer🔍️: Cevdet Erek
Cevdet Erek’s works investigate the rhythms, structures, and forms that guide our perception of space and time.
In 20 Jordan Street, Cevdet presents 'Away Terrace (Us and Them)', 2025, a new sculptural and sonic installation is inspired by the atmosphere, aesthetics and spatial arrangements of football stadia.
'Away Terrace (Us and Them)’ also sits in dialogue with the artist’s wall-based works which are on display at Walker Art Gallery, including an ‘Everton–Liverpool’ stadia-based diptych; a foundational reference point for the city.
At Tate Liverpool + RIBA North, the artist presents Father’s Timeline / Babamın Zaman Çizelgesi (2007); overlayed with Father’s Timeline in English (2025). One of Erek’s first works to deal with the concept of time, it explores collective history through critical personal turning points.
The artist has added a transparent component over the original and this new layer translates into English a selection of events from the timeline of his father – who is no longer alive – focusing on moments that might also be common to others, with specific names and places left out to allow for broader resonance.
