On May 9, Ukrainian activists in Vancouver protested against the Russian “Victory Day” celebration — not because we oppose remembering the victims of World War II, but because the Kremlin has turned that memory into propaganda used to justify new wars, violence, and imperialism.
Russia speaks about “victory over fascism” while daily bombing Ukrainian cities, killing civilians and children, kidnapping Ukrainian kids, torturing prisoners, and destroying entire communities.
The Soviet Union was not simply a “liberator.” WWII began not only with Nazi Germany’s aggression, but also with the Soviet Union’s invasion of Poland under the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, which divided Eastern Europe between two totalitarian regimes.
Some of the war’s most brutal battles and greatest losses happened on the territory of Ukraine and Belarus. Millions of Ukrainians and Belarusians were thrown into the war by Moscow, often with little regard for human life. Soviet blocking detachments shot soldiers who tried to retreat, and after the war many people who survived occupation were persecuted, imprisoned, or accused of “treason” simply for surviving under occupation.
For many nations trapped inside the USSR, the end of WWII did not bring freedom — it brought renewed repression, deportations, Russification, and fear.
That is why modern Russian “Victory Day” celebrations are not simply about remembrance. They are used to whitewash both past and present crimes, glorify militarism, and silence the suffering of the peoples who paid the highest price.
Remembering WWII victims should mean “Never Again” for everyone — not “We can do it again.”
Today in Vancouver, during a protest by Ukrainian activists against Russian “Victory Day frenzy,” a peaceful activist was assaulted while lawfully speaking out against Russia’s violence toward Ukraine.
The “victory frenzy” celebration once again revealed its true aggressive face.
We thank the Vancouver Police Department for their quick response and for arresting an individual who seemed to forget that he is not in rotten Russia, but in Canada — where violence has no place and the right to peaceful protest is protected by law.

A charity event to raise funds for an evacuation vehicle for the Ukrainian armed forces.
🌻We enjoyed the borscht and varenyky contest.
🌻We sang Ukrainian songs, listened to poetry.
🌻We ran and danced together.
🩵💛We felt a real Ukrainian vibe, as if we were somewhere in our native land, in the village. This atmosphere was created by people and, of course, the beautiful cozy farm Venechuk Farms, which everyone has already fallen in love with.
🇺🇦Ukrainians united for a noble goal. For our Victory.
🌞A huge thank you to the organizers, volunteers, the owner of the farm, who provided his territory for free, and the people who joined.
