Huzzah to the @museumofriverside for putting on one of Riverside’s greatest traditions, the annual Ice Cream Social at the Heritage House. It’s always fun sharing the history of America’s greatest game with the youth. ⚾️🇺🇸 #riversidesmudgepots #riversidecalifornia #baseball #heritagehouse #vintagebaseball
In honor of the United States taking on Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic today, here is a newspaper clipping showing the First Master of the Mission Inn, Frank Miller, when he captained the Blues Baseball Club. Also known simply as the Blues, the team issued an open challenge to the Athletic Baseball Club of San Bernardino, proposing an intercity game to be played in San Bernardino on Washington’s Birthday.
The newspaper challenge highlights the dynamic relationship between Riverside and San Bernardino. The two cities were once united under the same jurisdiction until Frank Miller and other Riverside advocates pushed for the establishment of Riverside County in 1893. The accompanying scan, highlights the paid separation of the counties.
Riverside has been home to many notable athletes including Bobby Bonds, Olympic gold medalist and basketball legend Cheryl Miller, NBA All Star Reggie Miller, 1984 Silver Medalist Cynthia “Sippy” Woodhead and World Series champion Troy Percival, and closer for the Anaheim Angels. Each reached the highest levels of athletic achievement and brought national recognition to their hometown.
Riverside has long maintained a rich sporting tradition. The city has supported minor league baseball teams and is expected to become the future home of a US soccer second division club. In earlier decades Riverside International Raceway hosted major NASCAR and Formula One events before its closure in the late 1980s. More recently in the early 2020s the California School for the Deaf in Riverside achieved a remarkable Cinderella story with an undefeated season that led to the school's first state championship.
Today remnants of old school baseball reminiscent of the days when Frank Miller captained the Blues can still be seen in the play of the Riverside Smudge Pots who are “Founded in 2018 via 1886” and are proud to represent their city while honoring Riverside’s historic citrus legacy.
Good luck to team USA in the WBC Finals.
Huzzah to battery mates @tyschilling23 “Boston” and @tpeacock5 “Traveler” who each married their brides on the same day in November. Congrats! #riversidesmudgepots #vintagebaseball
