Pull up to the docks on a boat or park your car in the parking lot, and get ready for cool tropical drinks on the harborside decks, stuffed-to-the'gills lobster rolls and live music on weekends. Some of you might not know the story of Ellison “Tarzan” Brown, but you should. In our Nostalgia section of the magazine, we cover the Narragansett Tribe member who won the Boston Marathon in 1939, becoming only the second indigenous runner to win the title. Read more at the link in our bio 👟🌇

“ It’s 12pm on a Saturday and I’m sitting criss cross apple sauce on a workout mat in the center of the Barre & Soul studio in Wayland Square. Almost thirty other people fill the space and sit around me. Our instructor lets us know that the movement part of the class will begin shortly causing us all to reach for our lighters to spark our joints and get ourselves ready for the upcoming hour of low impact exercise. Through a blanket of smoke, I look to the 70-year-old woman in front of me who is smiling as she lets out a small cough and says, “this is some real fun, isn’t it?” I smile and respond, “it is.”

Starting tomorrow, @elliesprov in downtown Providence will be a light-filled breakfast and brunch spot by day, and it will transform into a romantic French bistro with soft candlelight, classic dishes and a French wine list by night. On Friday through Sunday nights, servers will cater to each table, offering menu choices and an intimate dining experience. The daytime hours will not change, Tuesday-Sunday, serving breakfast, lunch, coffee and pastries. “Ellie’s has always been inspired by the Parisian way of life,” says Ellie’s and Gracie’s proprietor Ellen Slattery Gracyalny. “In Paris, many neighborhood spots move naturally from café to bistro as the day progresses. With dinner service, we’re excited to bring that same rhythm to Providence and continue offering a place for the neighborhood to gather.”

Always a great time on @therhodeshow with @willgilbert , who will be inducted into the Rhode Island TV & Radio Hall of Fame this September (Congratulations!). We talked about the May @rimonthly Top Doctors issue and an excellent feature package all about pediatric anxiety by Annie Sherman @alewife.author . The service feature helps parents navigate the growing crisis with information on behaviors to look for, triggers to avoid, solutions to help and resources to guide. We also talked about The Museum of Broadcast History in Woonsocket, the new restaurant @matunuckatelier , and the fact that Best of RI party tickets will go on sale soon in early June. The party is July 23, so save the date!

“It was incredible to see how supportive, open, accepting and celebratory an environment Gordon has become for queer students and queer families.”
Author and educator Rebecca Bendheim, Gordon Class of 2009, spoke to Rhode Island Monthly about her return to campus last April.
She came to campus fresh off the publication of her novel When You’re Brave Enough and helped lead the Day of No Silence, a Middle School celebration of LGBTQ+ visibility that has been happening at Gordon for twenty-three years.
In Rebecca’s interview, she also talks about finding her voice at Gordon, and using that voice to advocate for access to books about diverse identities.

Which restaurant to go to for the best Mexican food on Cinco de Mayo? Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. Before you load up the tacos and tequila, take some time to learn about the Mexican holiday. @rimonthly has put together a great list of places to celebrate and support our community through Mexican food. One of my favorite Mexican restaurants is @cielitomexicankitchen in downtown Providence. I also love @dolorespvd . Both places will be open for lunch and dinner tomorrow. At Cielito, I tried the Mariposa margarita and the corundas corn tamales with pork, as well as chicken tinga and carnitas tacos. We also had an incredible creamy flan for dessert. Happy Cinco de Mayo to all who celebrate tomorrow!
