I wanted to wait until a reliable source confirmed it, but unfortunately today we have to say goodbye to the G.O.A.T Jack DeJohnette. When asked about my ‘favorite drummer’ I kept coming back to Jack. His contribution and influence on generations of musicians are beyond measure.
Whenever I want to open up my creative box, just thinking about how he would approach a musical situation affects how I play in the best, most unexpected ways.
I am grateful to have heard him play live several times and to have listened to his amazing output of legendary recordings.
I never saw Jack as a drummer. Drums were his vehicle to paint, dance, sing, and tell the most fascinating stories.
Rest in power, titan of freedom, feel, flow, sound, groove, dynamics, originality and musicality.
