RIP Gerry Conway. One of my all-time favorite Spider-Man writers, he took the book over from Stan Lee and had an incredible run with artists like Gil Kane and Ross Andru that included the death of Gwen Stacy at the hands of the Green Goblin, the deepening of the Peter/MJ romance, and the introduction of characters like Punisher, the Jackal, Hammerhead, Tombstone, Gloria Grant, and Peter’s original clone, Ben Reilly. He also co-created the original Ms. Marvel, as well as Batman’s second Robin (Jason Todd), the villain Killer Croc, and the superhero Firestorm.
I had the pleasure of meeting him in New York back in 2017, and had also had a number of interactions with him over Twitter and email in the last several years. At one point a few years ago, I had also talked to him about doing an episode of my podcast to talk about his incredible career, but health issues got in the way, and I worried about bothering him any further at that point. A truly kind and gracious person all around, and I’m glad I had the handful of interactions with him that I did.
