My talented brother-in-law, Misha Erwitt (son of the late great Elliott Erwitt), called me recently with an urgent problem. His MacBook Pro had just died and the Apple Store technicians told him the drive was completely fried. Unfortunately it had been a while since Misha had backed up his machine and there were months of images on that dead drive. He called me because I had a similar problem years ago and my images were rescued by DriveSavers Data Recovery, an amazing company in Northern California. Misha shipped his dead drive to DriveSavers and miraculously, with a tremendous amount of work and professionalism, they were able to extract almost all of his images. As a small token of thanks, I sent the DriveSavers team a signed print of this portrait of Muhammad Ali, which I had photographed while he was touring US Army bases in Korea. Last week I was in Dubai attending the HIPA awards (the world's most lucrative photographic awards with over a million dollars in prizes). Much to my astonishment, I was just awarded their top prize: the Lifetime Achievement Award. I’m experiencing major imposter syndrome because previous winners of this award include Sebastião Salgado, Elliott Erwitt, Steve McCurry and James Nachtwey. Over five decades, I’ve been privileged, as both an award-winning photographer and as the architect of global photography projects to bring together the world’s greatest photographers and tasking them to document our shared humanity: from the streets of Japan to the deserts of Australia, from boardrooms grappling with artificial intelligence to clinics healing the world’s poorest communities. This award recognizes not just my own work, but the collective vision of thousands of photographers, filmmakers and storytellers who believe that bearing witness matters and that documenting injustice, celebrating resilience, and revealing our interconnectedness is essential to our future. My greatest wish is for HIPA to continue amplifying the voices and visions of photographers worldwide, keeping photography and story tellers at the forefront of how we understand ourselves and our world.
