…A rapid introduction to @gallerygalleryinc ‘s “Flex Disket”: Home Circuit System. Cord Organisation. Understanding forms of electricity. Different materials spatially arranged in relation to other types of elements… — “thing-power? Or the tyranny of things? Either way: certainty is the death of magic and meaning. Long live artistic labour.” @alreybatolstudio

For the next meeting of @a.common.practice i am honoured to introduce our guest for this month, Dylan Negri. Dylan Negri is an experimental photographer who explores using the dark room, specifically certain chemical processes creatively and abstractly to craft images that seem to create their own context around them – sometimes new images appear from some kind of archeology work - “degraded” looking family photos found in an abandoned attic. Sometimes the subject and environment of the shot is entirely jettinsoned to leave just the abstract play of colour and shape, blurring the lines between different artformts. Dylan says “my motivation with the work I explore has a lot to do with repurposing expired/fogged photographic paper, discarded cans and organic matter. Through these materials, I explore and encourage sustainable and more accessible approaches to image making. During my residency at Edendale Farm the surrounding community and environment played an integral role in shaping each piece. I continue to expand my work based on the same principles I explored at Edendale Farm. Every artwork becomes a visual story, where the materials and process leaves a trace and each step creates roots that connect the artwork to the people and the environment.” Everyone is welcome to come and be involved in discussions. We will be meeting at the back of the Alderman bar at 6pm, April 1st (ie first Wednesday of each month)….cyu 🫵there!!

Sting struggles to climb a newfound rock face and P sews a cross-stitch of the word Noel for Christmas. Mars writes cryptic crosswords placing hidden messages for a former __er. Meanwhile a director, _C_ has two eyes checked at the optomerist. It’s work related. Before all the letters shrink, c opens up and Doc scribbles down : “…new film transforms as the director observes what is newly developing”. Ged works at the origin energy plant. Some sense that something is causing unexplained fluctuations in power. Ged is the department head and doesn’t want the news to spread. A secret investigation has been underway—things become further complicated, when the detective is found dead…

…a glimpse of what to expect this Sunday evening, 7pm at @gallerygalleryinc “Random/Acces/Video/Editor” is the title of the program–I’ve put together a collection of different videos encompassing an all-embracing array of music videos, commercials, experimental shorts, excerpts from films, documentaries, news broadcast, interviews, orchestral concerts, medical imaging, YouTube commentary, archival footage and a whole lot more… the title is in reference to the CMX 600, released in 1971–a big bulky hunk of metal that was the first “non-linear editing system” used with specially made disk pack drives instead of tape or film. Its nickname was Random Access Video Editor (or just RAVE). My aim in putting together this program is in someways to try and invite new perspectives in understanding the form and structure of images positioned in the setting of an actual cinema – perhaps you have been scrolling for over an hour for this post to reach you, how many posts before this do you actually remember? How were they made – what was their intent? While not all the videos I’ve chosen for Sunday are Music Videos, Music Videos interest me a great deal because largely their visual dynamics seem to be peripheral to the image of the “star”, or the melody of the song or maybe some kind of statement being put across – “avant-garde” film does not necessarily have all these things–so their abstract design becomes more of the focus even though a large majority of popular music videos employ a lot of the same editing techniques and inspired formal composition(s) There’s been great enthusiasm for the BBBC screenings this year which has been exciting to see and be apart of, so thank you to any of you who have come along – there are just three screenings left this year – the Saturday night “micro-budget marathon” from 7pm - 7am, this program of shorts on the Sunday and the final screening on Monday of the silent film “The Lost World” (1926) with a live improvised score from the Factory House Band..see you 🫵 there 📽️✨

TAKE A SPIN WITH THE FREEWAY KILLER Next month the Brunswick Belekebek Cinema (BBBC) will be screening the Australian premiere of Ken Camp’s 1984 “HIGHWAY HYPNOSIS”, on Monday July 7, 7pm at @gallerygalleryinc The Los Angeles freeway killer takes a drive to Las Vegas—and back. This video by Ken Camp is both trancelike and turbulent, taking the viewer across the desert of California, through Nevada, and into “the frightening zone where lay the genetic codes and memories that make us all killers.” Only recently rediscovered, the film had its first screening since its 1984 premiere in March earlier this year @braindeadstudiosfairfax in L.A. Reactions from the audience ranged from “If Michael Snow made a gay horror movie” to “what’d you get if you crossed the KLF’s Chill Out with a Dennis Cooper novel”. The film here will be proceeded by a short recorded introduction by director Ken Camp. Special thank you to Liz @muscledistribution for her work in restoring and digitising the film. ft. song : Gang Gang Dance – MindKilla
