Today the City of London planning committee unanimously approved the scheme to carefully transform London’s historic Custom House into a hotel, returning the building to public life, creating significant new public space and interiors where the City meets the River. Unusually for a site of such significance, the project has been developed in close collaboration with and received the broad support of the City, Historic England, The Georgian Group, and SAVE. In a team led by @ormsarchitects , RGA is serving as conservation architects, guiding the approach to the historic fabric, and enabling both the restoration and sensitive intervention in one of the greatest Georgian buildings in London. The 'sensitive and brave' transformation of the Grade II listed former Royal London Hospital has been awarded the RIBA London Building of the Year 2025! Working alongside Allford Hall Monaghan Morris as Conservation Architects, the project has reimagined this historic site dating back to 1750 as a new civic home for the Tower Hamlets Council. Repairs and thoughtful alterations to Charles Barry Junior’s Grocer’s Wing have opened the building to Whitechapel Road, creating a welcoming public entrance. A new rear extension offers a bold contrast of old and new, housing staff offices and a council chamber that connects directly to the south-facing garden. This transformative project was made possible through close collaboration with @ahmmarchitects , @elliottwood_partnership , @atelier_ten and @bouygues_construction - an incredibly rewarding experience throughout. #Conservation #Heritage #HistoricBuildings #HeritageArchitecture #RoyalLondonHospital #TowerHamletsTownHall #TowerHamlets #AdaptiveReuse

We are proud to share that our project at The Ragged School Museum has been recognised as a Regional Finalist for the 2025 @civictrustawards ! The Ragged School Museum is a former brick warehouse which was converted into the largest Ragged School in the UK for impoverished children in 1877 by Dr Barnardo. Saved from demolition in the 1970s, the Ragged School Museum Trust was formed to convert the building into a functioning museum to teach new generations about the lives of destitute children in Victorian England. RGA was the lead architect to develop a The National Lottery Heritage Fund funded scheme to undertake the full refurbishment of the grade II listed buildings and extension of the Museum. The project proposed to transform underused parts of the building to accommodate museum rooms, lettable offices, event spaces for hire and a canal side café opening up onto the Regent’s Canal. The aim was to create a more coherent visitor experience throughout and to enable greater accessibility within the building, installing new lift and stairs. The proposals enhance and sublime the fabric of the building, bringing over 618m² back into public use. The authenticity of the buildings has been retained with sensitive conservation. The Ragged School Museum project sets out to improve the quality, viability and sustainability of the buildings for the future. We look forward to hearing the winning results in January! Happy 30th Birthday to the National Lottery Heritage Fund! Over the last thirty years, RGA have worked on many projects lucky enough to be funded by NLHF grants, witnessing a hugely positive impact not only on built heritage, but also on the communities and social environments that surround them. Our portfolio of NLHF funded projects span across almost the entire thirty years, from Freston Tower (2005), Kenilworth Castle (2006), Burghley Brewhouse (2007), St. Alfege Church Greenwich (2020), Ragged School Museum (2023), to our current work on NLHF funded projects including Marlowe Kit (Canterbury), Cloudesley Centre (London) and Paddington Old Cemetery (London). Thank you to @heritagefunduk for making all of this possible. #NationalLottery #NLHF #NationalLottery30 #Conservation #Architect #Heritage #HistoricBuildings

The team at RGA took a trip to visit our recently completed project at Newington Green Unitarian Chapel. The chapel is believed to be London’s oldest Nonconformist place of worship. The site is composed of the Georgian Grade II listed chapel and a later Victorian schoolhouse to the rear. Today, it is run by New Unity, as a place to gather, discuss and share. #Conservation #Adaptation #Reuse ##Refurbishment #VictorianArchitecture #GeorgianArchitecture

We are delighted to share that Richard Griffiths Architects have a drawing on display at this year's Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition! 'Retrochoir Bay 6 North' is a Construction drawing from the extensive cleaning works carried out to the external facade of St Alban's Cathedral back in 2006. For 17 years, Richard Griffiths was Cathedral Architect for St Albans, carrying out works of all aspects in conservation, reordering and upgrading. Over 7 years, cleaning, repairs and conservation of the historic fabric took place. Substantial works were carried out to the dirty and decayed remains of the cloister and to the medieval west porches, involving stone and mortar repair, Doff cleaning and shelter-coating; releading plain and stained glass windows; conserving medieval wall and ceiling paintings. RGA also undertook alterations to the layout of the church to provide for liturgical needs and equal access for its visitors. If you are attending this year's Summer Exhibition, do look out for us! Thank you to @royalacademyarts and @assembleofficial for the opportunity to be a part of this memorable occasion. #Architecture #Conservation #RASummerExhibition2024 #Heritage #RoyalAcademyofArts

This afternoon, the team at RGA took a stroll over to St Christopher’s Chapel in Great Ormond Street Hospital. How lucky are we to have such beautifully decorated spaces on our doorstep. Completed in 1875, the chapel was designed by Edward Middleton Barry, son of Sir Charles Barry. In the 1980s, demolition and rehousing of Great Ormond Street Hospital resulted in the relocation of the Chapel to the position it occupies today. The chapel was later reopened on Valentine’s Day 1994, by Diana, Princess of Wales. • • #decoration #chapel #greatormondstreet

We are delighted to share that our project at Tower Hamlets Town Hall has been announced as a regional finalist for The Civic Trust Awards! Richard Griffiths Architects acted as conservation architects along side AHMM to redevelop the Grade II listed building of the former Royal London Hospital on Whitechapel Road as a new Civic Centre for the Tower Hamlets Council. The proposed works included the reuse of the front building designed by Boulton Mainwaring in the 1750s redevelopment behind the retained façade of the Grocer’s wing, the extension designed by Charles Barry Junior in the 1870s. A new Z-shaped extension at the back now accommodates open plan staff offices and the council chamber and directly links to the south facing garden, as part of a wider public realm scheme. RGA was involved in the project in regard to the heritage repair, conservation, restoration of the listed building and the overall design strategy. Part of our services included the assessment of the significance and the issues facing the historic building, and the preparation of a conservation management plan. • • #restoration #conservation #londonhospital #towerhamlets #decoration • @ahmmarchitects @civictrustawards
