There have been so many great tributes to Bobby in the past few days, each speaking to what he meant to all of us and why who he was will continue to matter for eternity. For me, it was his eternal optimism. He was a searcher, always pushing for a better sound, the perfect lyric, and a better world. He was relentless in his desire to improve not only himself but also the world around him. He has set a high bar for all of us.
He was a believer in community, and he and his bandmates took great care to maintain the precious world around the Grateful Dead. He was also passionate about making lasting, positive social impacts. Whether it was protecting the Rainforest or getting out the vote, he would make sure to use his voice to amplify those who were not being heard. For him, speaking out and standing up for issues that mattered to him were as essential as the air that he breathed.
ย Bobby was also a founder and board member of the Rex Foundation. We are committed to continuing his vision of supporting the small non-profits that make social change possible.
And here we are, feeling adrift with his departure, a feeling we have felt before and will feel again. However, with this turn of events, it feels even more solemn. Who will sing the songs that have carried us so far? He knew that, in time, the torch would be passed, and he was hopeful and confident that his lifeโs work would endure in the hands of current musicians and future generations yet to be born. If we all put our hearts and minds into it, it should not be too difficult to manifest. It is the least we can do to thank him for a job well done!
We celebrate the rich, full life Bobby shared with us, and we are all better for it. We grieve his departure from this physical plane we call Earth. Please join us in sending our love to his wife, Natascha, and their two daughters, Monet and Chloe.
Wheel to the storm and fly -
Cameron
