This archival, lineage work has been the deepest work I’ve ever done. It has been *hard as hell* but the sweetness comes as an aftertaste knowing that I’m evolving and (I hope) being of service to past and the future generations. As I think about the legacy of these hard moments I pray that our facing of what’s difficult will bring us closer and closer to one another. I pray that we will not shy away, and that we will find intimacy and tenderness through the depth of our knowing. Applauding you from afar for your courage to wake up and try again each day. It’s been four years since I’ve released any music out into the world, and coincidentally— 4 years since I first did the interviews with my grandmothers that would become the foundation for my film Matriarch. That was 2021. death song is one of the original songs that will be featured in the film. This song was a gift and a prayer whispered to me one night two years ago, a gift I get to pass on to you now. There are so many systems we are working to dismantle. There are so many systems holding us apart from one another. The prayer I have held and continue to hold is that we will learn to take another’s joy and pain and hold it alongside our own as something sacred and deserving of care. May we live in a way where we are constantly removing our armor. May we live in a way where we are able to hold gratitude even for the things that were forever unresolved, for the things that made no sense, for the things that were unjust and unfair, for the ways all of life impacted us, even in its weight. May we allow ourselves to truly be shaped by life. To feel its impact fully. To be moved enough to change, to change things, to mold the world around us into what we imagine it can be. To everything that has had to end in order to make way for this life to take form, I thank you and I love you. In 2021 I did my first interviews with my grandmothers in what would later become the foundation for my documentary Matriarch. Towards the end of my 3rd day interview with my Vovó Damiana we spoke about death and loss. “Life is fleeting. Death doesn’t evade anyone” At the end of the year I feel myself in a meditation with death. Hyper aware of how avoidant we are as a culture of letting go, of grief, and so on. And yet it is one of the most natural things that we can do. When we hold on as much as we do, we interrupt the possibility of rebirth. This song comes 4 years after I released my first EP, and will be part of the constellation of songs that weave through @matriarchthefilm It means a lot to finally be able to share it with all of you, soon.
