Honored to be recognized with the one I built this with my best friend. 17 years ago we when we met we said we we’re going to build an empire, seeds planted and nurtured still growing.
I’m crying, so emotional that my baby is a real grown up now. I’m so proud of the beautiful, kind, caring, loving, woman you have blossomed into. You have stood strong through the hardest moments and always kept your poise. You’re the worlds best big sister often times mama #2 and we all appreciate how you love, protect, play, and care so much about your siblings. Look at you, winning in life exploring the world, making decisions, still so responsible, and making your mark. I don’t know what you will do next, but it will be amazing. The world is really your oyster and I will be right here right by your side with your whole village holding you down. I will never let you go because you are my baby forever and ever. I love you so much Lani. Happy 21st Birthday.

This is a true full-circle moment — I attended SFBFF for the very first time at 17 years old, and that experience inspired me to pursue filmmaking. Now, 18 years later, I’m returning with my own film for its San Francisco premiere.
