@Santigold ’s self-titled debut album isn’t talked about enough. “When I started Santigold, I didn’t really know what it was,” real name Santi White told The Fader in a 2010 interview. “I just knew that I wanted to do whatever I wanted.” This sense of ambiguity is all over her debut record, which arrived in the UK on 12 May 2008, a month after its US release. Santigold remains a pivotal album because it was unafraid to experiment with what was happening in New York’s underground at the time, ushering in a sound that felt entirely new. It wasn’t a standard pop record; instead, it fused post-punk, dub, electroclash, and hip-hop into a coherent sonic lineage that has rarely been replicated. Despite singles leaking early and circulating on MySpace, its success was undeniable, and yet the record still feels underappreciated today. Before her solo career, White made waves in the progressive punk band Stiffed, who developed a buzz in Philadelphia’s rock circles. Their debut album, Burned Again (produced by Darryl Jenifer of Bad Brains) was released in 2005, but the group disbanded a year later when White was offered a solo deal. During this transitional period, she also flexed her songwriting muscles, co-writing singles for Lily Allen (‘Littlest Things’) and Ashlee Simpson (‘Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)’). These experiences, coupled with a stint as an A&R assistant at Epic Records, undoubtedly contributed to the non-conformity heard on Santigold. Working with producers like Switch, Spank Rock, and Diplo, White realised her ambition of creating a project on her own terms, which explains why everyone embraced it so fervently. The rip-roaring ska of ‘Say Aha’, the spiraling electronica of ‘Creator’, and the plucky album opener ‘L.E.S. Artistes’ still sound ahead of their time, all sonically distinct, yet bound together by White’s straining, signature vocals. That same year, she opened for Björk, released a collaborative remix mixtape with Diplo featuring Kid Cudi, and teamed up with M.I.A. on the single ‘Get It Up’. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have seen the footage of @Bj örk’s surprise set at Venice Biennale. As videos continue to emerge, what stands out to us more than anything is just how much appreciation she has for the new artists coming through. From elusive UK musicians like @rianbrazil2003 and @traceyisyourfriend to rising NYC duo @fcukers__ and trailblazing popstar @n4t4nya , few stones were left unturned in what looked like a whirlwind set. Swipe through to see some of our pics. #bjork #venicebiennale #repeat #bjorkdj #bjorklive

Your trouser game isn’t on the same level as @milesdavis . Etched into the halls of musical greatness, the revolutionary trumpeter was also a sharp dresser. In the 70s and 80s when he started bending the rules of jazz, influenced by the psychedelia of his friend Jimi Hendrix, his style began to reflect a funk-flamboyance that became inherently Miles. Alien-like shades, big coats draped over his hunched shoulders and statement rings defined the look, but it’s his trousers that really stand out to us. From wide-leg to bell bottoms and bootcuts, his flares would be the envy of any Hackney hipster on the hunt for their next pair of kecks. Not only that, the trousers always had crazy patterns. Polka dots, asymmetrical patchworks, and table cloth chequers defined the looks, which were a stark contrast to his often aloof and secretive personality. Swipe through to check out some of Miles Davis’ finest trouser-focused fits. #milesdavis #fashion #jazz #repeat #milesdavisart

Everyone needs a hobby! @damonalbarn ’s love of ping pong runs deep. The @Blur and @Gorillaz frontman’s table tennis table and paddle is a constant fixture on his rider, challenging the likes of kingpush, @therealkano and @littlesimz to games whilst on tour or on a break from recording one of his many hits. His ruthlessly competitive nature even lead him to training with England’s professional coaches to refine his technique. He also took on members of the British Olympic Squad before Beijing. “Yeah, everywhere I go I have to had a table tennis table. I love it; it’s a brilliant way to relax when you’re working,” he explained in an interview at his Studio 13 hideout. “I’m playing at the Lyon Festival and they wanted a slightly longer set, so I said, ‘if you give us a table tennis table then you’ll get your longer set’.” Swipe through to see some archival clips of him taking on Little Simz, Kano and Pusha T. #repeat #damonalbarn #gorillaz #blur #pingpong

Everyone knows @Nigo as the pioneering Japanese designer behind A Bathing Ape (BAPE), @humanmade and current artistic director at @kenzo . Over three decades, since opening a tiny shop in Tokyo that introduced the Japanese youth to American streetwear, he’s become a fixture of fashion and a reference point for creatives across a broad range of disciplines. But to the core, Nigo is a collector. An archivist who’s taken it upon himself to acquire everything he’s into to the point of obsession. From hip-hop records to @louisvuitton trunks and KAWS figurines to Star Wars memorabilia, he’s known for having storage lockers filled with ephemera people could only dream of obtaining. At the @designmuseum this month, Nigo’s displaying over 700 objects in his collection, including a recreation of his teenage bedroom, rare designs and ceramics hand-thrown by Nigo himself. It’s the first museum retrospective of the designer that’s taken place outside of Japan and definitely not to be missed. The exhibition reminded us that there’s an art to archiving and Nigo has mastered it. To honour that, we’ve unearthed some photos and videos where he goes through his collection. Swipe through to take a look. #repeat #nigo #bape #thedesignmuseum #humanmade

We’re done gatekeeping: @horstartsandmusic is one of the best festivals in Europe. Held at Asiat Park in Vilvoorde, Belgium, the intimate electronic weekender is unlike any other festival, spotlighting some of Belgium’s finest DJs and local artists, who help construct the surreal stages and exhibitions in the run-up to the event. We went last year and had a great time, getting caught up in the mind-boggling grounds and looking up in bewilderment at the various projections that get illuminated on the imposing power station. Some of the memorable sets include Brazilian techno and baile funk experimentalist @rhrmusiq , dark 2-step and dubstep revivalist @sage_introspekt and Hong Kong-born junglist @gyrofield . This year, there’s a lot we love about the lineup. Swipe through to see some of our picks and let us know who you’re looking forward to seeing. #Horst #repeat #festivals #electronicmusic #kioskradio

“David Byrne’s lyrics are very, very prominent in my life.” Let’s be real, why would anyone not like Talking Heads? Here’s King Krule (@Edgar_the_breathtaker ) sharing his affinity for the David Byrne-fronted band in his now vintage, but still iconic, Amoeba What’s In My Bag?. It’s well worth watching the full video if you haven’t already. A young Archy Marshall also runs down why the likes of The Damned and Pixies were such formative influences on his sound too. đŸ“č @amoebasf #repeat #kingkrule #talkingheads #amoeba #archymarshall
