@Santigold âs self-titled debut album isnât talked about enough.
âWhen I started Santigold, I didnât really know what it was,â real name Santi White told The Fader in a 2010 interview. âI just knew that I wanted to do whatever I wanted.â This sense of ambiguity is all over her debut record, which arrived in the UK on 12 May 2008, a month after its US release.
Santigold remains a pivotal album because it was unafraid to experiment with what was happening in New Yorkâs underground at the time, ushering in a sound that felt entirely new. It wasnât a standard pop record; instead, it fused post-punk, dub, electroclash, and hip-hop into a coherent sonic lineage that has rarely been replicated. Despite singles leaking early and circulating on MySpace, its success was undeniable, and yet the record still feels underappreciated today.
Before her solo career, White made waves in the progressive punk band Stiffed, who developed a buzz in Philadelphiaâs rock circles. Their debut album, Burned Again (produced by Darryl Jenifer of Bad Brains) was released in 2005, but the group disbanded a year later when White was offered a solo deal. During this transitional period, she also flexed her songwriting muscles, co-writing singles for Lily Allen (âLittlest Thingsâ) and Ashlee Simpson (âOutta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)â).
These experiences, coupled with a stint as an A&R assistant at Epic Records, undoubtedly contributed to the non-conformity heard on Santigold. Working with producers like Switch, Spank Rock, and Diplo, White realised her ambition of creating a project on her own terms, which explains why everyone embraced it so fervently.
The rip-roaring ska of âSay Ahaâ, the spiraling electronica of âCreatorâ, and the plucky album opener âL.E.S. Artistesâ still sound ahead of their time, all sonically distinct, yet bound together by Whiteâs straining, signature vocals. That same year, she opened for Björk, released a collaborative remix mixtape with Diplo featuring Kid Cudi, and teamed up with M.I.A. on the single âGet It Upâ.
